The Abbey of Saint Beneductus near Mamelis is build in 1923,a nd designed by the architect Dominicus Boehm. It is a peacefull and quiet place, where one can enjoy the ‘singing in the silence’ of the monchs, the Gregorian chant. It is situated near a forest where one can walk and reflect. I have been here several times, and it always boosts my energy, and reduces any stress level. The monchs are very polite. The food is good and tasty, and on Sundays one even gets a bottle of beer (as the monchs) during the meal. The church in which the Gregorian chants are sung is designed by Dom Hans van de Laan, who became very famous with this architectural style. He went back to the essence of a building, which led to a sober, but very functional church.

We decided to spend an afternoon and what great fun it was. There is a whole tourism industry going here, partly on the Belgium side, but mainly on the Dutch side. So what is there? First of all catering in the form of a restaurant, a poffertjes stand, a fries stand and a cafe. All good quality. Then there is the highest point in European The Netherlands. Demarcated by 3 border stones. Note, this is not the three-country point which is 50 m away. Very worth visiting with also a nice reminder of the old country of Neutral Moresnet. Finally, there is the labyrinth, the biggest in Europe. We spent around 1 1/2 hours in there, were ready to throw in the towel, but managed to finish it. A great visit!

We were staying in Maastricht and visited Vaals for the day. Glasblazerij Gerardo Cardinale was booked ahead of time and we had a great demonstration. In half an hour time Gerardo manages to totally convince you of his craftsmanship and artistic credentials and that in a very pleasant way. A great visit and a must when coming to Vaals.
