Three Forks is a city in Gallatin County, Montana, United States and is located within the watershed valley system of both the Missouri and Mississippi rivers drainage basins — and is historically considered the birthplace or start of the Missouri River. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. The city of Three Forks is named so because it lies geographically near the point, in nearby Missouri Headwaters State Park, where the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers converge to form the Missouri River — the longest single river in North America, as well as the major portion of the Missouri-Mississippi River System from the headwaters near Three Forks to its discharge into the Gulf of Mexico. Three Forks is part of the Bozeman, MT Micropolitan Statistical Area of approximately 100,000 people and the greater Bozeman demographic area of approximately 125,000 people.

Beautifully crafted and highly detailed herd of horses displayed in a stunning landscape. Certainly hope there's a breeze while you visit. It will animate the rope manes and tails on these ponies. Look carefully as you approach and you'll find a small pull-off area, and a bit of exploration will reveal a fairly well worn pathway up the hill. A bit steep, but nothing very strenuous to get up among the herd. We found it very well worthwhile to trek up to admire the work and the views.

Due to COVID-19, we were limited to the Paradise Tour, so we did not get to see as much of the caverns as usual. However, what we did get to see was spectacular. Our guide, Zach, added a wealth of information about the history, the geological aspects, and the preservation of the caverns. This was one of the highlights of our trip. There is a bit of a walk (3/4 mile or so) to the entrance of the caverns for all tours. So plan accordingly.

The Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin Rivers merge to form the Missouri River, which was an important geographical area for early native Americans, traders, trappers and settlers.
What a beautiful area that we had to ourselves! Seeing the headwaters and dipping our toes in the cold water was a great experience. The scenery is spectacular and you can walk along the 3 rivers and take it all in. It's only a few miles outside of town and worth it to see the same sights (mostly) that Lewis & Clark experienced.

This place is one of the best historical open and natural Montana State Parks around. The history of the Indian practice of channeling and running huge herds of buffalo down over a cliff to their death, in order to harvest the hides, meat, bone and sinew for the tribes year long survival is the history of the Montana West. This site brings you into the event up-close and personal in every aspect. A wonderful site to visit and help understand how this history was written.
