Ker Place, formerly named Kerr Place, is the headquarters of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society located in Onancock, VA. This magnificent Federal period Georgian style house was built in 1799 for prosperous merchant farmer John Shepherd Ker and his wife Agnes Corbin Ker and their family. It is described by the Virginia Historical Landmarks Commission as "the finest and most elaborate Federal mansion on Virginia's Eastern Shore," and "one of the Shore's major architectural landmarks." This house operates as a museum that is open for visitors with trained volunteer docents giving guided tours of the interpretive interior as well as various exhibits, laboratories and research space. It is also used as a venue for weddings and other special events for the community. Tours of the house are available throughout the year by appointment or March - December. We suggest that you call ahead to ensure that a docent will be available.
We visited on a slightly rainy Saturday and we're the o lay visitors at the time so we got a private tour. The house is beautiful with amazing architectural detail that have been refurbished. While none of the furniture is original to the house they have done a nice job of recreating what it would have looked like during the Ker residency. I was less impressed with the upstairs which is set up more as a museum for prominent families on the eastern shore. There is nothing wrong with this, I just prefer to really focus on the family who lived in the home. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the house and local history. The tour took about an hour and was free so it was the perfect way to immerse yourself in some local history.

When you want to slow down and watch the world go by waltz aboard the Tangier Ferry for the 75 minute trip to Tangier Island. The crew is professional and welcoming, the views amazing (watch the starboard side for the osprey nests. We saw the momma feeding her young.) Just be sure to be back on the boat on time!

Hopkins & Bros. Store is a historic landmark that is owned by the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society. Inside the store is an exhibit about Onancock, VA and a restaurant, Mallards at the Wharf.
A great place on the harbor. Nice lunch and dinner in a casual setting. The service is excellent, good menu for a casual lunch or dinner and a reasonable price also.

This "store" is off the beaten path, but well-worth a visit. On the Artisan Trail, this shop lets visitors get a glimpse of the artist at work. The owner has her own sheep, which she shears and uses the wool for various products which she...MoreThanks so much for your visit! I love your picture of our yarn dyeing area...we're creating new yarns there daily. I hope you and your husband stop in again when you're on the Shore!

Went to closing night of Shipwrecked and it was FABULOUS. Can't wait to see another play in this small theater that used to run silent films. I may make the 3 hour trip from Delaware just to go see another play. Wonderful find!

Willie paints the eastern shore of Virginia with a lifelong intimate knowlege of nature having been born and brought up on Tangier Island, hunting and working on the water as a younster and teenager. Art has been his occupation since 1971 and your visit will inspire you with his love for art and all it brings to show what beauty is all around us.
