As a Florida native, this had been my very first visit to this state park. As a first responder who worked through Hurricane Irma, we entered this Florida State Park for free, even though we would’ve been more than willing to pay full price for entry to this park (well worth the price). It was VERY cold for Florida {in the 40’s} therefore, it was a little uncomfortable to just stroll around the park comfortably. We really enjoyed the “Fish Bowl” = the Underwater Observatory! It was a great way to observe the manatees and other wildlife up close from down below. The staff is VERY knowledgeable and willing to engage in conversation. Great for both kids and adults. We intend to definitely make a return visit.

Rehabilation center for injured animals, with a broad selection of birds and reptiles, including the manatee.
We could have spent all day here, wandering around but we had a limited amount of time. We had gone to a different location to spot some manatees, but they hadn't sighted any in a while, so we were directed here, which is a place we had originally thought of going to.
A path takes you around the different parts of the park. It is similar to a zoo, but on a smaller scale, with fewer of each animal. All the animals have been injured or had something happen to them where they cannot survive in the wild.
You can view their hippo, alligators, panther, bobcats, manatees, flamingos, eagles, owls, otters, etc. There is a reptile room with various snakes- the handler even brought one out for us to touch. There is also a bird room, where for a quarter you can you get food from to feed them.
They have a pavilion where you can attend talks about animals, as well.
It was easy walking, with wide paved paths, so stroller & wheelchairs could navigate fairly easy. It's a very pretty setting with lots of tree cover & shade too. There are a few snack carts throughout, but they are cash only.
There is a boat tour that is included with admission too, but we missed the last one, which left at 3:30. There is an underwater viewing area however, it was the only thing we found disappointing. We were not able to see anything. I'm not sure if it was due to the water being cloudy or if the windows are cloudy. This is also the one area inaccessible to wheelchairs or strollers- due to going downstairs.
If you spend a large amount of time, there is a dining area up at the front of the building. There are restrooms at the front, as well as some in the back near the reptile house.
There is a trolly that will take you from the main parking lot to the park.
They stamp your hand upon entry, which will allow you to leave & reenter.

Southern Slam Outfitters offers in-shore and near shore fishing, as well as scalloping trips. Bring your kayak to be mother shipped to the back country for fishing. Southern Slam Outfitters is the only outfitter to offer a Private Island Retreat. What a great way to see the Nature Coast wildlife up close.
We are from Citrus County and wanted a local waterfront getaway and found Capt Carey. We are absolutley thrilled with the experience. Private Island getaway with a captain for 48 hours includes home cooked meals and awesome fishing. Thanks Carey for a wonderful birthday weekend. We will spread the great news and we will be back. We offer a one of a kind experience with our captains having 20 plus years of local experience. If you want to just tour the river day/night, go out to eat by water, or go on a manatee tour or a snorkeling trip just give us a call. We also offer fishing trips as well, night flounder gigging trips, nigh gigging trips. We will be offering gator hunts and wild boar hunts very soon.
We were very excited to swim with manatees, but the customer service we received when scheduling already made us nervous about our trip. There was no signage with"Reel River Tours" on it. We arrived and were told they only have 4 wetsuits to rent, so we had to swim without them when it was only 54 degrees out! Our captain was very unprofessional. She spent most of the tour on her phone or talking about the little money she makes. Swimming with the manatees was an awesome experience! I would just suggest going with another company for it.

Come have an opportunity to see the great West Indian Manatee in the crystal clear springs at the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge!
Nice set up. Took boat into the area from the main entrance. Enjoyable view, animals. The park has numerous areas, the manatees are always available, a rhino, and the traditional Florida creatures, snakes, pink flamingos, to name a few. Enjoyable afternoon. Like most Florida attractions, very expensive. This one at least was a reasonable presentation.

It is a microscopic island with 5 monkeys living on it. It is just feet from the dock. Takes about 2 minutes to boat around. I actually felt sorry for the monkeys being trapped like that. I hope no one ever forgets to feed them everyday.

Not well maintained and you'd really need to search long and hard to find something worth buying. It is extremely hot and dirty during the summer. There were several vendors selling puppies and kittens and they were left out in the heat which seems very cruel.
We will never go back and we love flea markets.
