Mossyard Farm Pottery

We are a paint your own pottery studio looking out over Fleet View. Come and choose from a wide variety of Pottery that can be kiln fired or painted to take away on the day. A lovely family friendly activity!

Reviewed By M2549TMkevinh - Paisley, United Kingdom

This was an absolutely fantastic activity for our family (4 adults and 2 children). At first was a little uneasy at the thought of painting pottery, however, what an experience it turned out to be! Kids loved it with the activity of painting and the adults loved it even more! Prices may appear high for the original pottery, but believe me, when it is glazed, you receive more than your monies worth. I myself paid £17 for a large mug and therapeutically painted this over the duration of 2 hours. The time flew in and it allowed me to paint my story onto a mug which will now be a treasure for life. The kids are the same, these treasures will last for a lifetime and the memories of this activity and related holiday will always be attached. Much recommended and will do this again for sure if we holiday in the area again. If you are staying in the area (or if you love pottery or painting) get booked in and create a memory 5 stars is not enough!

Cardoness Castle

This site is closed for now. We’re working hard to gradually reopen the places you love while making sure the experience is safe for everyone. A fine example of a Scottish tower-house castle, Cardoness Castle was built in the later 15th century as the fortified residence of the McCullochs. Cardoness Castle is a well-preserved ruin where you can admire the exquisite architectural detail of this still magnificent structure, including the splendid fireplace and wall-cupboard where the family's best silverware was displayed, touch the intricate stone carvings and soak up the superb views over the beautiful Fleet Bay to the Solway Firth beyond.

Cally Gardens

Cally Gardens and Specialist Plant Centre is a treasure trove of exotic and rare hardy plants gathered from around the Globe. The towering 18th century walls of what was once the kitchen garden for Cally Palace now provide shelter to 1000's of rare and exotic plants. The garden, which was created by the famous plant collector Michael Wickenden is now in the care of the plantsman and ecologist Kevin Hughes. Kevin took ownership of Cally in 2018 and is working hard to get the gardens back in shape and ensure that the 4,000 plus plants are a delight for all to enjoy. Since arriving, Kevin has brought his own stunning collection of Magnolias and Trilliums and also has added to the collection Nerines, Galanthus and Paeonies. Sadly Cally Gardens have been neglected for the last few years and new owner, Kevin Hughes is working hard to restore the gardens and bring his own informal and environmentally friendly style to Cally. The Garden is being managed as an organic and low impact garden.

This is not your normal nursery. Plants for sale are in part of a large walled garden which is restoration work in progress - and all the more interesting because of it. Kevin was on hand to explain about the work he is doing and was seemingly not overwhelmed by the task ahead of him! If you are interested in garden plants you must visit.

The Mill on the Fleet

The Mill on the Fleet is a restored cotton mill dating from 1785 which is now an exhibition centre. It is attractively situated on the banks of the River Fleet with a long riverside terrace as part of the dog-friendly Mill Café. The exhibitions are spread over 3 floors telling the story of Gatehouse and the surrounding area and includes a temporary exhibition programme, regular events, and local arts and crafts. On the top floor there is a very popular secondhand bookshop. It is also the main tourist information point for Gatehouse. It is a community project run by volunteers - we look forward to welcoming you.

This venue, conveniently situated in the village, is always worth a visit. There is an excellent cafe on the ground floor, with a good selection of snacks and friendly staff. Toilets are clean. The museum section upstairs is well laid out, with interesting exhibits and enthusiastic, well-informed staff. On the floor above is a traditional bookshop - well worth a browse. Fairly easy parking nearby.
