A Special Place for Jimmy James

Jimmy James (the second)was a famous black-tracker & belonged to the Pitjantjatjara people. He became a legend in his own lifetime when he was used extensively by the Police forces in SA, VIC, NSW & the NT.Jimmy passed away in 1991, this monument is sculpted out of 2 large slabs of black granite which are finely polished & engraved with images of birds and animals - a part of Jimmy's spirit world.

Situated on a gentle bend in the mighty River Murray, the Special Place for Jimmy James, a noted Aboriginal tracker, is very well realised utilising Indigenous art and modern design. It has an attraction that is strangely reflective yet bounds with life. Incorporated into the design are signs naturally a part of the “rocks” that a tracker would be looking for whilst searching. Finding them was a surprise for me and deepened my appreciation of the Special Place. This was a brilliant touch to incorporate an activity into the site and lifted the Special Place into the superb. Plaques are scattered through the area with acknowledgements of Jimmy James from people with whom he had contact over the years including from one whom he had rescued through tracking. As a visitor to the area, it was a highlight of the trip. To me the secret is to take time at A Special Place for Jimmy James and soak in the atmosphere. Return? Most definitely when next in Berri.

Berri Visitor Information Centre

Reviewed By branham2016 - Adelaide, Australia

The staff at the Berri Visitor Information Centre were extremely helpful, friendly and very knowledgeable about not only Berri but the Riverland in general. In the spacious contemporary designed building on the banks of the Murray River, there is a wealth of information, local art and crafts and local produce with general travel information as well. Armed with pamphlets and a marked map, we went to the café next door for a coffee to plan our next spot to visit in Berri. The views of the Murray from the rear of the centre backing onto the river are superb and definitely not to be missed. A walking trail passes between the centre and the Murray. Return? When in Berri next, yes will be the first port of call to obtain updated and current tourist information.

Murray River National Park

Come and explore the three separate areas that make up Murray River National Park. Katarapko, Lyrup Flats and Bulyong Island cover more than 13,000 hectares and conserve the verdant Murray wetlands that flow through the park. The Katarapko area features floodplains and several wetlands. The area is an important breeding area for native wildlife, including waterbirds, and is an ideal place for birdwatching. Lyrup Flats encompasses 2,000 hectares along the floodplain on the northern side of the river and provides wonderful opportunities for birdwatching and fishing. You can take your dog for a walk in the Lyrup Flats area of the park providing it is on a lead. Bulyong Island is only accessible by boat. The island is home to a number of wildlife species, such as the western grey kangaroos, emus, pelicans, kingfishers and parrots.

Katarapko Creek is just so peaceful. All the campsites are spread along the creek so you're not camping right next to someone else. We're locals and our favourite campsite is only 20 minutes drive from Berri. We like paddling on Katarapko creek rather than the river because it's not as wide and you don't have speed boats whizzing past. If you don't have your own kayaks there's kayak hire in Berri and they deliver out to your campsite. It's our favourite place to get away for weekend and relax around a campfire (bring your own wood) - campfires allowed during non fire-ban season.
