I had no idea this museum existed but what a gem. Even though it was free, clearly there was plenty of money spent in the creation and curation of the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum. The presentation is top rated and compares favorably to famous institutions such the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. The fact that the museum is located on Camp Shelby, the training location of the highly decorated Japanese American 442nd Infantry Regiment, was a bonus. Oh, German POWs were kept on Camp Shelby during WWII as well. So much history!

There is never a bad day when you visit the Hattiesburg Zoo! Some may think, well it's not a very big zoo, but it doesn't have to be to be outstanding! The grounds are well kept, the staff if friendly, and the spotlight is always on the animals. And the animals are always well cared for and healthy! The new additions being built for new animals coming soon are beautiful. The train and carousel are charming. The splash pad is great during the hot MS summers. The kids love the ropes course, and mining for gems is always a favorite. I promise you won't be disappointed. Like I said, there's never a bad day at the Hattiesburg ZOO.

The Mahogany Bar

Reviewed By storytelleren - Laurel, United States

The Mahogany Bar has turned into the best BREW PUB in the South! Bar None! Serving cuisine from Hattiesburg's oldest, (and only) Gourmet Restaurant, and a selection of over 150 beers. It is THE PLACE to spend the hours from 5 - 7 pm. Happy hour makes the beers very affordable, and all appetizers from the Crescent City Grill are 1/2 price. These are GOURMET SELECTIONS - think of them as Small Plates instead of appetizers. My wife and I are Brew Pub aficionados, due to the unique menus and really good beer. We have eaten in many, many of them all across the country. We tried their Fried Green Tomatoes. This is a small plate with 3 tomato slices arranged around a shrimp and mushroom sauce in a wine reduction. It is to DIE FOR! We also had their shrimp and crab meat stuffed mushrooms. Again ... the best we've ever had. Then, I spied a roast beef and cheddar over french fries, with some deep fried jalapeno slices on top. After eating most of the 3 appetizers, a couple of excellent local beers, we could barely get out of our chairs. Do your self a favor, and give this a shot. It is the finest food in the Pinebelt. Period.

Popped in with the bf on a road trip because we had heard Southern Prohibition was THE brewery in Mississippi to try. We did a flight to sample 4 beers and the bartender was wonderful at helping us pick a good set. The Purple Fluff was such an interesting beer that we got some to go! The pizza was also delicious, fresh, and fire roasted. All in all, a great stop!

Paul B. Johnson State Park

Nestled in the piney woods of southwest Mississippi is a beautiful, serene state park. Discovered this place online and myself and 4 other friends decided we would take our RV's there and spend a week. Making reservations online and reserving the campsites we wanted was easy and accommodating. All the campsites were well maintained and had all the amenities that modern day campers have come to expect. The scenery is beautiful. A large lake big enough for boating, fishing and all water recreation activities is right there. Bath houses are plentiful, boat launches and camp stores are onsite and the grounds are meticulously well kept. The staff are friendly and unintrusive. Pets are welcome in the campground. Cabins are also available to rent. Hattiesburg MS, is a stone's throw away for shopping, dining and nightlife. The MS gulf coast with beaches and casino's is less than a hour away. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a quiet get-away in a beautiful setting.
