Santa Clarita, officially the City of Santa Clarita, is the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County, California, and the 24th largest in the state of California. The city has annexed a number of unincorporated areas, contributing to the large population increase. It is located about 35 miles (56 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, and occupies most of the Santa Clarita Valley. It is a notable example of a U.S. edge city or boomburb. Santa Clarita was ranked by Money magazine in 2006 as 18th of the top 100 places to live.

So, you have been to nearly all of the local walking, running, and worthy places, huh? Hmmm, maybe not. Drive out to enjoy a hike, a run, a casual walk at Towsley Canyon Park in Newhall. it's just off the I5 Freeway north. They park has ample parking. Yes, dogs are allowed on leash. If you have adventurous little ones, they will enjoy a portion of the hike. You do have some "good" climbs, so bring some water and maybe something to carry you across the loop hikes. Or, you can go to you feel it's time to turn around and go back and see all that you missed while you were hiking up the trail. All ages hike up here and you can take the full trails either way, or there are even shorter trails available. Check the website for more details. We have been there a number of times and we see runners, day hikers, and visitors from out of the country who made Towsley a "bucket list" hike. There are restrooms, drinking water, and great views to see. Also, this was an area where they searched for oil many years ago. As you are walking up the trail, you will see bubbling oil and signs of what it took to find oil when Newhall was still being settled many years ago. The hillsides show the evolution of the area too. I even found a shark's tooth on one of my visits. So, sites...yes. Views...yes. A good hike...oh, yes. So, there you have it...you have to take the drive. After your adventure at Towsley, drive a little further up north on the I5 and you will find all sorts of shopping and restaurants. Hey, this could a be nice day for a drive and dine! Enjoy.

This museum is housed in the former home and ranch of silent film cowboy star and director William S. Hart.
My mom and I (both residents of Santa Clarita for 20+ years) stopped by for a Sunday afternoon tour of Hart's home. We were pleasantly surprised to see not only the beautiful house itself, but also the outstanding Western artwork inside. What a fantastic collection- some of the artwork in here (Remingtons, Russells, etc) is truly world-class- a hidden gem right in our backyard we had never seen before! Our tour guide Evan was kind and helpful and the security guard, Alex, was also extremely knowledgeable about the artwork and museum. They graciously answered our questions and were very accommodating. Thank you both!

The people at the Gentle Barn are absolutely amazing and they are an example for the rest of the world of how to treat animals. I would take my kids to the Gentle Barn at any age and on any day, and when we had to stand in line, I would explain to them that we are NOT at a zoo where animals have been put there against their will and live miserable lives, but on the contrary, we're privileged to be at a sanctuary, where horribly abused animals or animals on their way to slaughter were saved and have had their dignity restored. I am also always honored to pay the "hefty fee" knowing that this money is wisely used to care for the existing animal residents but also to rescue many more. I always make my kids aware that there are so few places like this on this planet, even though there needs to be one for every farmed and abused animal and that we are so lucky to be able to set foot in such a haven. It's actually their favorite place. Any kid who is made to be the witness of what goes on at the Gentle Barn becomes such a better human being in the process! I really believe it changes them for the much better by making them more conscious and exposed to true kindness to the most dejected. Thank you to everyone at the Gentle Barn, including donors, who make this animal haven possible and who allow the public the privilege to spend time in this unique and beautiful place.
