Matale (Sinhala: මාතලේ, Tamil:மாத்தளை) often written as Mathale (pronounced Maathalé), is a large town in Matale District of the Central Province, of Sri Lanka. It is 142 kilometres (88 mi) from Colombo and near Kandy. Surrounding the town are the Knuckles Mountain Range, the foothills were called Wiltshire by the British. It is a mainly agricultural area, where tea, rubber, vegetable and spice cultivation dominate.

Wanting to see Sri Lankan Batik in action, our driver stopped us by here. The staff is very friendly and immediately offered to take us to the rear of the shop and see the process in action. Several workers were back there hand-crafting the products. After the quick overview, we were given space and time to shop. We did pick up one small piece to take home and frame - if we had more luggage, we would have bought more - my wife had some creative ideas to make pillows, etc with several of the batik's and fabrics they had. A very friendly and quality store!

When I went it was called Island & Baba Batiks - going by the carrier bag anyway! However, this seems to be the same place going by the pictures. I like making this sort of visit. Yes, I want to see all the stunning temples and caves and statues and gardens as well but a place like this gives you a feel for the local way of life and you feel you are learning something. I found this a fascinating visit and it was all very well presented. The shop was a bit expensive but not excessively so for what you were getting and so much better to bring home a homemade item that a mass produced fridge magnet!
