My wife and I always celebrate our birthdays and wedding anniversary by dining at one of Chicago's finest restaurants. Since we've been married for 43 years, we have visited virtually every steakhouse, Italian, French and seafood restaurant listed among the top 10. On September 2, to celebrate my 79th birthday, we reserved a table at Maple & Ash. Located at 8 West Maple Street in the Near North Side's Golden Triangle area, at the corner of Maple and State Street, it has been ranked as the No. 1 steakhouse in the city, one of the best in the country. Instead of ordering filet mignon or ribeye, however, we opted to stick to our more fish/less meat diet. Maple & Ash's seafood menu is outstanding. What'll you have? Salmon or Branzino or Alaskan Halibut or Dover Sole? My wife chose the Dover Sole with sweet corn. I couldn't resist the Branzino with shrimp cocktail and Yukon Gold Gratin potatoes. For dessert, we shared a large slice of coconut cream pie with a candle on top. You couldn't ask for a better birthday present than that. Maple & Ash is the most elegant, posh, swanky, luxurious restaurant we have ever experienced. We were seated in the large main dining room with a 30-foot-high ceiling. It is surrounded by two smaller dining rooms, a large bar and lounge and two-Michelin star chef Danny Grant's large open kitchen with a wood-fired hearth. Daniel Forsythe, our energetic and personable waiter, acted more like an impresario...suggesting, recommending, cajoling, describing, directing and serving. The evening wouldn't have been as much fun without him. We took his card and promised to return for my wife's birthday in December and our anniversary in April--if not sooner. Thanks and Happy Birthday, Taylor!Mason MarksMaitre D’ Maple & Ash [email protected]

I'm not especially a seafood fan. I rarely order fish from a regular restaurant menu (not liking "fishy" flavors) so a visit to a restaurant such as this fills me with a certain trepidation. Having said that, this was a delightful meal and the presentation, execution of service and the dishes themselves, first class. The menu is not huge but allows the diner to select an experience. The appetizer section is titled "to share" (or similar) and these are small plates one can order to be delivered a la tapas. You can order your own, of course. There are also soups (lobster bisque and clam chowder among them) for personal consumption too. Then there are the main courses. You don't need to move onto mains should you prefer to dine on the appetizers. It is up to you and works well. The appetizers are great and the presentation is first class. We ordered an excellent crab cake, shrimp bruschetta and, what seems to be a signature, the octopus. Although the mis en scene of the dishes when placed in front of you is superb, my dining companion is not a fan of octopus and was put off by the appearance of a single, large, apparently grilled tentacle. However it was delicious - beautifully cooked and flavored with a little spice. Not rubbery as one might fear upon initial viewing. As I mentioned, not being a fish fan I was drawn to the fish and chips option which I chose (I am a brit after all) and it was again, perfectly cooked, battered cod. I enjoyed it although I have to say, I was already reasonably replete from the appetizers. My wife had the bass and pronounced it excellent indeed. Again, presentation was a delight. Desert was a magnificent chocolate cake with coffee ice cream. A great end to the meal. This was an anniversary meal for us and the restaurant was extremely generous in recognizing that. They provided us with glasses of bubbly as we sat down and complimentary small deserts of creme vanille served in a half shell on a bed of ice. Such touches make a meal truly memorable. The dining room is large but you have to book to be sure of eating here. We were late to the game so ate at the unfashionably early hour of 530. I am not a fan of such late afternoon dining but was glad we got the chance to dine here whatever the time of day. The space is airy and there is some noise but really nothing that distracts from conversation across a table thank goodness. Also nothing as vulgar as a TV to pollute the ambiance. This is a place to eat well and celebrate the fact, and I think it does an admirable job.So; excellent food, very attentive and friendly (as well as knowledgeable) service in a great location. A good wine list (again served by knowledgeable wait staff) rounds things off. Not cheap but you get what you pay for and it seemed very reasonable to me for the overall experience. Highly recommended, even if seafood isn't entirely your cuisine of choice.

Ever.Grilled Vegetable Salad (Vintage Prairie Farms Spinach, farro, manchego, aged balsamic) with Chicken Breast was absolutely delicious. Salad was done partially on a French recipe; and chicken tasted heavenly. The size of the meal was very generous. Crispy toasted warm bread was made to order, and Earl Grey Tea couldn't be more up to the task of warming me up. My genuine thanks to the Chef for such delicious meal.I knew about Beacon Tavern, but it was my first visit to this restaurant. I am delighted to once again thank server Jose, who was utterly professional - totally knowledgeable about the menu, very courteous, attentive, served meal in a timely manner. I thanked him in person, and now I am happy to do it again. The interior looks of this restaurant reflects one of modern decor trends in using subdued, gray-blue colors, dim-lit seating areas, soft background music, - thus, creating a very pleasant, relaxed, and welcoming ambiance. At the end of my lunch, I also had a chance to talk to one of the restaurant managers - Corey couldn't be friendlier and nicer, he is an excellent listener and communicator. This was a very enjoyable - and a very tasty! - lunch at a first-rate restaurant.Merci beaucoup, Beacon Tavern!

Frogs anyone ! Yesssssssssss....A full plate of them is to many and an appetizer does not have soup or salad. We have become a regular. For the legs anyone again. It was a rainy afternoon. The football game was Monday night and we sought somewhere to have dinner. Yes that place called Hugo’s Frog Bar.We circle the block on Oak street between Rush street and Michigan Avenue looking for the eighteen dollar parking spot(free park on street). We missed a free park when a Mercedes Benz truck got the spot we had been eyeing. Well, we circled the block again. As we approached the corner of Oak Street heading north or Rush Street at the intersection waiting for the last person to exit the crosswalk, the Mercedes Benz truck was starting to exist the free parking spot on the southside of Oak street. Quickly we turned the corner an perched next to the car behind the truck, and patiently waited for the truck to move out, we got our free parking. Yes, there are not 7 day meters between Rush Street and Michigan Avenue on Oak Street. The eighteen dollar parking is the valet park cost sixteen and two dollar tip, and that is an eighteen dollar park.We got the same table. Table number eighty-eight was in our records at the restaurant. We see some of the same wait staff and we greet them and they greet us. Now down to the reason for being at Hugo’s.The waiter provides the menu and starts the explanation.. Yes, we listen knowing full well that changing the main course will not happen this week. They bring the water and bread; they runs down the menu. They finish the rundown. Broccolini was viewed on the menu and the change began. Yes we switched out the basmati rice for the broccolini. We split the main entrée of 10 frog legs with soup and salad. You can only get chicken noodle soup on Sunday. Well that just right on time. We had the chicken noodle soup (one bowl), two salads, and the entrée.The soup was not as hot as before. Yet the legs were piping hot. The sauce required the call of the raisin bread to sap the sauce. Rochelle used her frog legs’ sauce to accompany the broccolini. The broccolini was grilled. The menu had legs, soup, salad, and Sunday evening early dinner had broccolini instead of basmati rice. Shalom

A Peruvian friend recommended this restaurant, and I’m glad she did. Since we knew nothing about this cuisine, our waitress, Jeimmy, took her time explaining the menu and making recommendations. We tried the Criollo Cebiche, which was amazing, with plenty of seafood. It could have done with less marinade, but it was very delicately flavored and delicious. The chicken empanada was one of the best I’d eaten, nice and flaky with lots of flavor. We decided to order an entree, and chose the Lomo Saltado. This had been recommended by my friend, and this must be some type of Peruvian comfort food. Perfectly prepared tenderloin, potato wedges, and onions in a delicious broth. Wow! Finally we decided in dessert. Actually, we had two. We ordered the cookies and ice cream, but since we were celebrating an anniversary they also brought out a cheesecake free of charge. The cookies were made from quinoa flour and were delicate and flaky. The cheesecake was soft and delicious, and topped with pineapple and pear. Amazing. Overall I was very impressed. The service was top notch, from Jeimmy to the servers, and we look forward to returning soon.

This is a lovely friendly restaurant with wonderful seafood. I enjoyed my half bottle of St. Emilion, and everything we tried was very good, including the excellent warm goat cheese salad, perfectly prepared seafood tower and the great bananas foster dessert. The s’mores dessert is overwhelmingly sweet and comes with a super chocolatey brownie like base, FYI. Service was enormously friendly and helpful. One star off for the frankly terrible “jazz” performer.

Salads and desserts are no challenge for a skilled chef and taste very good. Therefore people love this place. Booking far in advance is absolutely necessary.
