History and monuments dot this landscape almost as often as the golden farmlands. Learn about America’s 31st president at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch. In northeast Iowa is the Effigy Mounds National Monument, a group of prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds. This part of Iowa is also home to the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage. The 37-county region tells the story of American agriculture, agribusiness and farm life and is affiliated with the National Park Service. In addition, there are five national wildlife refuges here. If you love history, imagine seeing the Amana Colonies, consisting of seven historic villages in 1855 by German immigrants as a religious communal society. Here you can also buy antiques, hand-woven baskets, furniture and clocks and locally made wine and beer. In Ames, take the family to see the Christian Petersen Art Museum, a newer structure that exhibits works of art by Christian Petersen and contemporary artists. You won’t want to miss the state capital of Des Moines, home to Blank Park Zoo with its naturalistic exhibits and more than 800 animals from five continents. You also should enjoy the Brenton Skating Plaza, an outdoor family entertainment venue.

Very nicely landscaped paved walkway (ADA compliant) along the top of the protective levy along the Mississippi River. (Turns a necessary dike into a useful viewing platform). Informative postings along the walk provide historical information. Walk passes in front of the old Star Brewery building (be sure to go inside to see a well done, free mini-museum about the brewrey...lots of artifacts and interesting history. Drink some wine at the in-hoise wine bar). The trail ends at the railroad tracks where you can get a good view of the old shot tower and the railroad swing bridge over the Mississippi. We were fortunate to see the swing bridge in action (normally open for river traffic) as it closed to allow passage of a train after a river barge passed through. The walk is free, scenic and informative, so why not do it?

Wildcat Den has always been a favorite place of mine. Unlike our neighboring state of Illinois, the state parks in Iowa remain open during this unusual time of the COVID-19 Virus. When I visited Wildcat Den there were numerous families there enjoying the crisp, sunny day. I even encountered two men from a neighboring city in Illinois running their remote controlled trucks in a stream bed.Granted, everyone was observing "social distancing". Wildcat Den is known for the rock features such as the Punch Bowl and Steamboat Rock and you'll get a good workout as the trails wind up and down the terrain. As with many state parks, the trails lack maintenance because there is never enough staff to make needed repairs. As a result you'll be going around staircases that have been damaged due to erosion. At this time when other states are closing parks, I can't find much fault with that. It was just great to enjoy this natural wonder!

My daughter wanted to play at a playground so we stopped here. Little did I know that there was so much more than just a playground. There is also the Cutler Conahoe covered bridge. And, then you can drive up the hill to Clark Tower for a beautiful view of the countryside by going to the top of a tower that was built to look like a castle. Also, one quick tip. It's a little unclear when you first enter, but this is a "drive through" park. So, don't feel the need to park in the lot near the entrance. You can drive your vehicle down the relatively narrow path, which I wasn't sure at first was for cars.
The Lyon County Freedom Rock pays tribute to our country and its greatest heroes. It also reminds visitors and residents alike of our annual summer celebration and the patriotism that George has come to be known for. We invite you to visit the Freedom Rock and enjoy the pond, railroad depot and recreational trail at Locker Park. The pond is stocked with panfish and is easily accessible.
