Dortmund has become a center of high-tech industry, but back in the day, it was one of Germany's first brewing centers, and Dortmunder beer is definitely worth tasting in a local bar. Visit the Reinoldkirche or the Marienkirche, or venture south of town to the ruins of Hohensyburg Castle. December is an especially festive time to visit Dortmund—one of Germany's biggest Christmas markets takes over the center of town.

Coming out of the railway station the first building to catch the eye is the wonderful simple but massive spire of the Petrikirche. Strangely, it’s only been there since 1981. The original one collapsed in 1752, and was only replaced when the church was rebuilt after war damage. The church is an outstanding example of the Westfalian hall church, almost square in plan and with nave and aisles all the same height, and unlike it’s neighbour the Reinoldi church has its windows filled with plain glass which shed light upon its great treasure : the aptly named Golden Wonder of Westfalia, an altarpiece from Antwerp dating from 1521. Reportedly the largest reredos of its kind , purchased by the church in the early 1800’s from a secularised Belgian monastery. Luckily, moved fore safekeeping during WWII, it now stands resplendent in gold and vivid colours behind its Glass protective screen in the Chancel. It really is a WONDER,
