Hubby & I drove this scenic byway in both directions on the east side in early March and couldn't get over the beauty! We had no traffic to speak of this time of year! There are many areas along the road you can pull off safely out of the way of traffic, to take pictures, etc. We saw mountain goats in the crevices of the rock walls off the side of the road. There are several creeks and gulches you drive over and you can see down to some of them from the road. We drove down to Peck Gulch and found ourselves right at lake level along the shore. This time of the year the water level is very low so it looked so strange! We lucked out on the day we drove from Eureka, MT to Spokane, WA as it was a blue sky and sunny day and the water was various shades of blue! We started our route on the way back to Spokane by driving into Rexford and found their boat launch. It was very interesting to see that during the low water season, there is a paved driveway down to a boat launch then when the water is higher, there is a paved driveway. So 2 different levels for boats to enter the water! We don't have that in Lake Michigan! Even though there wasn't any snow on the road across the bridge, we didn't drive along the west shore as we heard it was closed and impassable somewhere along the way. The Lake Koocanusa bridge is pretty neat! You can get amazing pictures/views while on the bridge looking south and north over the lake. To the north are the distance Canadian Rockies! Did you know that Koocanusa comes from "Koo" - Kootenai National Forest, "can" - from Canada, and "usa" - from USA!! Ha! Highly recommend driving this route any time of the year for mountain lake beauty at its finest!
