Renting bikes was the highlight of our trip! What a great way to see the city and experience the local bike culture. I don't think you can really call your Amsterdam experience complete if you don't rent a bike--truly the best way to get around! We stumbled upon Black Bikes when looking for the closest bike shop to where we were staying and we couldn't be happier. The prices were very reasonable and the bikes are great--sturdy, comfortable, with built-in locks, bells, and lights. They have many locations around the city so returning is very easy, and it's great if you have any trouble with your bike (though we didn't experience any). We biked all over Amsterdam, into the neighborhoods, through Vondelpark, onto the free ferry to the north, and then north of the city into Waterland. Above all, the person who helped us rent the bikes was SO NICE; he took like 30 minutes with us recommending various bike rides and restaurants. Without him, we wouldn't have discovered the Waterland ride and it was the highlight of our trip. We are avid bikers, but even if you're not, I recommend renting a bike here. It is very safe and the terrain is very flat and easy to ride. Overall, a highlight of our Amsterdam trip.
