The Berrima District Museum is an outstanding, award winning, country museum that tells fascinating stories about people, places and objects of the Southern Highlands.
Don’t be fooled by the exterior of the building that houses the Berrima District Museum, the museum itself is well worth the money and extremely interesting to visit. My family and I recently visited over Christmas and spent a good hour or so wandering round the museum and reading all the signs of information. There is so much to see and read that you could easily spend half a day here. I was fascinated to read about the history, especially of the WWII German internees That were held prisoner here and admire the collection of items from days gone by. There was also another temporary art exhibition inside with works by Rembrandt which was wonderful to see with digital works and audio to listen to the stories. It is very clean inside and cool during the summer which was a welcome relief to the heat outside. I would definitely visit again when I’m next in the area.

We first visited here in September to see the Meredith Woolnough embroidery exhibition and were pleasantly surprised by the size of the gallery, the variety and range of works that they had on display (and for purchase) and the beautiful exhibition space, which as the name would suggest, was an original Milk Factory built in the early 1920's. The Gallery's displays included paintings, sculptures, ceramics, jewellery, woodwork etc. When we returned the following month the various main exhibition spaces were showcasing a different lot of works from different local and Australian artists. There is also a good cafe inside the gallery where you can rest and enjoy a drink and a snack whilst looking down on the gallery spaces. Worth a visit.

The columns at the entrance create a striking impression of an imposing civic building. The architecture and sandstone construction make it a beautiful structure. Inside the attempt to recreate the court in its heyday are professionally done. Exhibits give an insight into convict life in the early years of the colony.
