Visit the old Märkish Baumkuchen and Hanseatic town of Salzwedel and experience a historic old town with its surroundings. Excursions to nearby Wendland, the Lüneburg Heath, Letzlinger Heide and Drömling are interesting pleasures. In the centre of Salzwedel, not far from the Neuperver Tor, is our country-style old town hotel, just a 10-minute walk from the historic centre of the city. Located right next to the Goethepark, the hotel is an ideal base for small and large excursions. Equipped with 33 comfortable hotel rooms, two cosy restaurants, an event hall for celebrations, a seminar room/conference hall conference room, a dedicated hotel lobby bar, a beer garden terrace and a small The hotel's sauna area. 6 modern bicycles are available for hire.
We have stayed at the Hotel Union on 4 or 5 occasions in the last 15 years and have always had a good experience there. The rooms are situated on the ground, first and second floors. Request a room on the ground floor if you have difficulty with stairs as there is no lift. The double rooms have been adequate for us, although there were no tea or coffee-making facilities. They are clean and warm although a little dated. Some have pleasant views over a river to the rear. Our room on the ground floor had a very long wait for any hot water to reach the tap or shower, although I know this had not been a problem in other rooms. The road to the front is very quiet and parking doesn't seem to be a problem. The manager was very pleasant and helpful, as were most of the staff. However, there was not always someone at reception and I noticed that they didn't always respond to a ring of the bell when other customers required something. Breakfast was good, typically continental but also with a hot plate of scrambled egg and diced bacon. I got the impression that this had been left in the hot plate for some while, although it was hot and tasted good. On one morning, the staff was very elusive and it wasn't so easy to get a refill of coffee, for example. I don't know where they went, but they didn't respond to a call or even a ring of the bell at reception. On another day they forgot to put out any hot food, but some fresh scrambled egg was cooked for us on request. Dinner was amazing with quite a good choice. They were all very substantial meals and my only complaint would be that they didn't cater for people who wanted lighter ones or smaller portions. If you'd had a reasonable lunch, you might find it difficult to find something suitable on the menu. The dining room is attractively decorated in pine, but could do with a new carpet, which is worn. There were two attractive and well-stocked bars. The prices have increased over the years, but the quality is very good. I noticed on this visit that there were more events for local people, (parties, brunches, etc) and this is probably necessary when the hotel is fairly empty, out of season. There is free 24 hour wifi, on a renewable basis, but I had problems connecting to it.

This delightfully quiet hotel set opposite the huge gothic brick Katharinenkirche, is really a nicely run B&B. There are no public rooms, there's no restaurant, just a breakfast room and you are given the key to the door to let yourself in and out. Two very nicely restored half-timbered houses and Mrs Stoltenberg is a lovely hostess. Spotless room with television but no minibar, no air conditioning or other frills - and that seems to be normal in Germany. Excellent local-style breakfast and we were offered - and refused - anything special we'd like. No credit cards.

We stayed for three nights at the end of July, in a party of nine.We were the only ones of our group to be given a room in the main building. The room was allegedly a double, although the beds were separated by a wardrobe and half the bathroom, so seeing your partner was difficult, let alone having a conversation. The beds were squashed in under the eaves, which made sitting up in bed impossible. In fact, the eaves took up so much of the room that my tall(ish) husband could only stand up in the middle. Our main complaint is that the restaurant , bar and beer garden were all closed, apparently because the owners had gone on holiday, and that we were given virtually no information. The man who showed us to our room promptly disappeared, and, apart from two women serving breakfast we saw no other staff. The hotel was completely locked up for the rest of the day and evening. Coming back from our first evening out in the town, we couldn't find out how to get in to the hotel, and had to find a friendly German to help us work the esoteric lock. The bathroom was clean and light, but the shower didn't work properly. It kept shifting from hot to cold, but there was nobody we could tell. There was no information in the room, apart from the wi-fi code - eg. breakfast and checkout times. Our room was at the front corner, directly opposite a chruch bell which struck every fifteen minutes, and gave an extra wake up peal at 7.00 am. A more distant church joined in, a couple of seconds later. Obviously, not the fault of the hotel as such, but there was no staff for us to ask for another room. We resent paying for facilities which were not available (bar, restaurant, beer garden) and wrote immediately to the owners by e mail and snail mail, in German. We have still not had the courtesy of any response from them, hence this negative review.
