Decent Hostel

This is a good hostel. The staff here speak English and are friendly. The 200 yen all you can eat curry dinner is delicious and an absolute bargain. The bathroom is large although there are only 3 showers in the whole building. The dorm has 24 beds but they are split into sections so it felt more like a 4 bed dorm. So it was comfortable. Location is great to get to Miyajima. And only half an hour from Hiroshima.

Simple Stay Miyajima

Simple does not mean clean

Reviewed By A S

I could well understand small space and simplistic design. I could well live with staff not speaking English. All this is fine. What is definately not fine is: Lack of window in the room (and no info about it when booking) Bugs on the walls Dirt Stinky smell Mold on the walls and matress! Broken vending machines Beware! Stay away!

Great hospitality

Onomichi is a town with poetic feelings. Many writers and haiku poets lived in and wrote about this beautiful town. Go to the top of Sengokuji Cable car station. You can overlook uncountable numbers of islands in Setouchi Sea. Immaculately clean facilities. Bath towels, hand towels, shampoo, treatment, bath jel, face wash etc, all amenities are equipped. Together with hair driers. しまなみ海道サイクリングの拠点として、初めてゲストハウスに泊まりました。オーナーさんの心遣いがうれしい宿です。

Hiroshima Saijo Youth Hostel

two dormitory rooms plus one TATAMI lounge with guest kitchen.40 minutes train from Hiroshima station to the east.Only one minute walk from Saijo station to the west.Saijo is the center of Hiroshima prefecture and convinient place as base to travel around Hiroshima area.We supply breakfast(300 yen)only but there are many places to eat and drink out.

In Saijo, I would recommend this place for your stay!

I used to stay in Saijo when I was a student and never knew this place. I often come to Saijo and stay near the station and this was my first time to stay over in this hostel. I was with my kid and booked the whole room which was still the same as the other hotel around. The room was very clean and comfortable. In our room, which was supposed to be for four people with four beds, we used up only one bed. In the room, there was a shower and bath room and toilet attached. What I liked was the kitchen room. We can have a chat with other guest and cook. They offer Japanese sake in the fridge and we can buy them from 100 yen. What a generous. They also offer great water and drink them for free. The owner was so kind and likes to talk but not very talkative. He can read the air. We did not have breakfast but other guest was fascinated with the quality, which was only around 300 yen. There is a washing machine outside so you can wash your clothes there. I definitely will stall there next time!

Shimonoseki City Hinoyama Youth Hostel

Immaculate hostel with great hosts

Reviewed By Mee Mee S

We decided on this hostel because of the photo (on the booking website) showing the view of the Kanmon Strait from the rooms. Oh yes, we got the amazing view and more...! We arrived on a rainy day right after picking up our rental car and driving from Kitakyushu to Shimonoseki via the undersea Kanmon tunnel. After navigating the winding road up the hill, we arrived to a truly warm reception from the manager, Kubo-san. The two-storey hostel was new and immaculately-kept. If the hostel looked clinical, the warmth from Kubo-san and his colleague Tomo-san dispelled all our fears. The rooms were all upstairs, along with the toilets and wash basins. The sex-segregated showers and baths for soaking were located downstairs. Also on the ground floor was a huge dining area with a cosy lounge area and a small pantry equipped for drink and light meal preparation (reheating etc). The hostel had a kitchen and offered breakfast, as well as function room(s). One whole wall of the dining area was glass, offering sweeping views of the Kanmon Strait and bridge. On fine days, the deck off the dining area is perfect for relaxing and barbeque. We were in a spacious room with four bunk beds neatly tucked into the right side of the room. Except for lockers, the room had no furniture but a lovely tatami mat flooring. There was nothing to distract from the fantastic view of the busy Kanmon Strait and the bridge, ever-changing with the light, mist and traffic. Perfectly framed by the glass wall and window... Now that I have established the physical appeal of the hostel, I have to mention the people who made our two-night stay memorable. Kubo-san the manager, despite his difficulty with English, was extremely friendly and genuinely warm. He roped in his colleague Tomo-san, who spoke very good English, to help us plan our stay in Shimoniseki. Thanks to both of them we walked the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel (from Shimonoseki to Kitakyushu and back) and visited the Karato Fish Market. With their enthusiastic guidance and ernest encouragement, we ventured further afield to Tsunoshima Island, Motonosumi Inari Shrine and Senjojiki campground. We had a most fantastic day out... The next day before we left the hostel, Kubo-san gave us each a handmade (by his sister) puffer fish memento and Tomo-san handed us a travel kit (of snacks and caffeine drink) to help with our onward road journey. It was hard to leave.... (Photos show the view of Kanmon Strait from our room and the cosy corner for lounging in the dining area)

I stayed for 4 nights and spent a night at another hostel in Shimonoseki. Yamaguchi city itself does not attract as big a backpacker crowd as Hiroshima. But that is the highlight for me, the peace and quiet of the city with minimal tourists. At the hostel, I had my own room at a discounted rate for foreigners and the dining, bathing facilities were all great. The highlight is certainly the owner herself who was absolutely wonderful to speak to about basically anything, ranging from travelling to politics! This place is highly recommended, do note that if you don't drive, the buses are about one per hour and there is not much activity in the city after office hours. In terms of making a reservation, the easiest way is to give the number on the website a call.

A concept hotel, sadly a concept that doesn’t work.

Reviewed By Y8187LIma

Aesthetically a beautiful hotel. Practically it just doesn’t work. The aspects that led us to selecting this location were the fact it had a cafe and bar on site. Sadly those aspects whilst active weren’t open to guests in the evening. When we arrived on Tuesday evening at 6.20 pm on our first night, we were advised the restaurant was closed for the evening. This was despite the fact multiple people were in the kitchen cooking what we realised in time was a party for friends and staff of the hotel. The party continued until after midnight at an adjoining building creating noise. The second, night again the bar and restaurant was off limits as what appeared a chamber of commerce meeting was hosted. A microphone and PA were in use until around 8.30 pm making any activity in our room not possible let alone the option of getting a drink or a bite to eat. Location is great by the water and there is free parking within 100 metres. Rooms we’re aesthetically great, new and clean. As were the bathrooms. The family room we had, consisting of four large capsule style bed spaces, didn’t really work practically for us as a family. The windows with no curtains requiring us to change cramped on our bed was a pain. I will say our daughters 8-10 however thought the room the best thing ever. As my title suggests, a great concept, but one that failed on the practicality sense for our family. Of course COVID has made the usual run of service challenging but if not all services are being offered they shouldn’t be advertised. In a challenging environment it is the locations with exceptional customer service that win. Fixing the customer experience and delivering on what is advertised is a core opportunity for this place with loads of potential.
