Welcome to the Nature Island. Remote, affordable and, as yet, unspoiled, Dominica deserves more than a day's visit from your cruise ship. Spend a week (or more) exploring mountains covered by tropical rainforest, endless hiking trails, some 40 dive sites and black-sand beaches. You'll soon be plotting ways to return every year.

Waters from the 50-foot Emerald Falls plunge into this swirling, fern-filled basin, giving hikers a cool respite after a leisurely hike to this sight.
We used Shoretrips on a recent Royal Caribbean Cruise. The tour was called: TRAFALGAR FALLS AND EMERALD POOL. We had a group of 14 so we got a private shuttle with a driver named Clem. He was outstanding!! I am not sure of the actual tour company, but if you ever to Dominica, try to look this up and Shoretrips and ask for Clem. Dominica is a very very beautiful country.

Nice little waterfall and easy access (but like everywhere else in Dominica, there's some mud and walking on roots). Just put in Spanny's Shop into Google maps and you'll be fine. There's no admission fee (at least right now), and you can actually drive down the roadway that says "Posted, no trespassing", and park back there, cutting off about 5 minutes of walking from the store, if you want.

The beauty of Dominica is on full display on this stretch of the Waitukubuli Trail. The 6.8 km hike took about 4 1/2 hours and took my wife, our host/guide Tom and I through pristine rainforest. From lizards, to birds and enormous palms to tiny flowers, this is a nature lover’s little slice of heaven. A few words of caution, bring the proper gear (pants, comfy hiking footwear, hat, more water than you think you need, a good walking stick) get a knowledgeable guide (Tom from Wanderlust Caribbean is the man), take your time and watch your footing (a couple of tricky spots that need some extra care). Don’t let any of that discourage you as the views are unmatched.

For Wavine Cyrique, follow the road south from Roasalie. On the main road there is a sign for the village of Rivere Cyrique. Follow this road and on the left hand side you’ll see a sign pointing to Wavine Cyrique.

An easy 20 minute walk affording glimpses of the Sisserou and Jacquot, two rare and endangered parrots.
Amazing bird watching tour guided by Bertrand "Birdy" Jno Baptiste. Traveled to the National Forest Preserve and hiked a nature trail. Sighted over 30 species of birds. Highlights were very close-up sightings of two of the threatened Jaco Parrots, 3 of the 4 species of hummingbirds, a pair of Lesser Antilles Barn Owls guarding their nest, and a huge 700+ year old tree.
An 18th-century hiking trail.
