Recognized as a top cultural site by the Maryland Department of Tourism, this free museum contains several rare historical artifacts from the surfing world collected by surfing legend Bruce Gabrielson over a 60 year period. Displays include Dale Velzey's original 1950's templates and planer, an original Makaha Skateboard, the first day edition of the Duke Stamp from both Huntington Beach and Waikiki, signed posters from numerous surfing legends, a signed poster from the Wooden Year's exhibit opening at the International Surfing Museum, a set of Rick Griffin drawings, plus paintings and photos from artists and surf photographers from the East and West Coast. Several antique boards are also on display. The museum requires reservations and is located in the offices of the National Surf Schools and Instructors Association. During the summer months the museum is closed when the surf is good.
Bruce Gabrielson is a living surfing legend. It is a unique experience to have Bruce deliver a personal tour of the museum, as he knows the personalities and backstories involved with every item. This is definitely worth your time!

This combination museum and state park includes more than 70 archaeological sites from the prehistoric period 9,000 years ago through the Colonial period.
This is a great place for a picnic lunch or for a long walk or watch the sunset. Wigwams are very cool to see. We didn’t go in the museum, Just walked about 3 miles in the park. Great water views! There’s a few picnic tables or you could bring your own chairs and blankets. Easy walk/hike.

In the Exhibition Building, you can touch 20-million year old fossils taken from Calvert Cliffs; discover the ever changing world of the Chesapeake Bay; and learn how humans shaped and changed this region over time, working its waters for survival and profit. Visit the Drum Point and Cove Point Lighthouses; see our outstanding small boat collection, take a ride on the Wm. B. Tennison, a log-built bugeye, and experience the Lore Oyster House, a restored oyster processing plant. Touch a horseshoe crab or Diamond Back Terrapin, see skates, rays, and small sharks cavort, and watch otters, Bubbles and Squeak, at play. Stroll the marsh walk and spy water snakes, great blue heron, osprey, and hermit crabs in their natural environment. We are a community museum, established in 1970 by local residents determined to preserve the maritime heritage of Solomons Island. We are an educational museum, offering everything from the pre-school programs to Elderhostel. We are a research museum, renowned for documented discoveries in Miocene paleontology, and publications on local history based on original research. We are a relevant museum, staying in the forefront of environmental issues and offering a forum for public discourse on controversial topics. We are a partnering museum, actively pursuing opportunities such as the 1812 Grand Tactical that allows us to support and celebrate other institutions. Visit the Museum Store for jewelry, books, home decor, toys and all kinds of unique gifts for people of all ages!
My husband and I visited the museum during our stay on Solomon's Island and enjoyed our time there. Lots of great displays and enjoyed experiencing the fish and otters. We liked it so much we returned with our son later in the week. On our second visit we arrived in time for the last lighthouse tour . This is a great place for children - there is a separate kids area where they can do many different hands-on activities. Our son enjoyed seeing the jelly fish and watching the otters eat dinner.

Attempted to go to the park, but they are still only allowing Calvert County residents to access the park due to COVID. We did go three years ago and it was beautiful. Unfortunately it appears we will have to wait until the COVID restrictions are lifted to visit again. However, the State parks are open to all.

A group of friends all purchased tickets to see a movie on Running Hare's big screen. The cost was $25/car and you could use your radio to hear the movie but I thought their speakers did a great job. Food, wine, wine slushies, beer, and popcorn were available for purchase. We enjoyed the pizza and there were two flavors of wine slushies in two sizes. They accept credit cards. There are porta-johns with hand sanitizer. You might consider bringing hand wipes, lawn chairs, and snacks. You can be "together" with friends and still social distance. Sign up for notifications with Running Hare to be notified of the movies they are showing for given dates.

A turn-of-the-century railway museum featuring photos and other related memorabilia.
We were in town after biking the Chesapeake Bay Railway Trail and decided to see the museum. It's small but full of fascinating local history I'd never heard of. At the turn on the century (1900-1935ish) Chesapeake Beach was a destination to rival Atlantic City and Coney Island with about 5,000 visitors a day in the summer. Who knew? The railroad was built specifically to funnel the crowds in from DC. Plenty of photographs and artifacts. The museum volunteer was very helpful and gave us a real appreciation of what we were seeing. We spent over an hour, there was so much to look at. Really enjoyed our visit. There's a small electric train garden and a scavenger hunt for kids. Parking is tight until the giant parking garage is completed across the street.
