This is a handsome and lively temple with a Lao style gold and white stupa surrounded by a cloister with some fine paintings adorning the entrances On the day we were there lots of traditional dancers were performing outside the main wall - and inviting the passers by to join in.

Similarly to many South East Asian waterside cities - Singapore the Merlion, Songkla the green naga - Nakon Phanom has a particularly fine gilded, seven-headed naga as its signature monument spurting water and clearly respected by the populace. Lots of photos opportunities here too by day or by night

Nakhon Phanom is the Thailand that used to be elsewhere. Ethnic Lao & Vietnamese along with Pu Thai and various other tribal people. Come to where there is no MacDonalds, no KFC and no man-buners. Sit on the mighty Mekong and delve into the thousands of years of history laid bare before your eyes. There are not many places left in the world like Nakhon Phanom, but to find a few more hop across the river on the Friendship Bridge 3 and venture out on Route 12 or simply stay in Thakhek, either way your heads and shoulders above those stuck in Chiang Mai or Bangkok. Life is when you live it.
