The sanctuary of “Nossa Senhora da Peneda” is dedicated to The Virgin Maria, Mother of Jesus. You can find this location when driving from Lindoso to Gaviera on the national road. You have two possibilities to visit the sanctuary, when you see it from the road, you have a small road on your left, who leads you to a Hugh parking possibility, first option. The second option is that you are continue on the main road until you arrive on a “T” junction, here you turn left and are arriving at the sanctuary, here you have allot less of place to park the car. The inconvenience of the first option is that you will have to walk along the Hugh staircase with some interruptions and about 160 stairs before arriving at the feet of the sanctuary. For the people who had enough of the walk, they can take the elevator at the right side of the staircase at the foot of the sanctuary. Enter in the elevator and put a piece of 50€ cent and push on the 3th level, so you will arrive on top and in front of the sanctuary, who is really need to see. It has being built at the end of the 18th and the 3th part into the 19th century. The Sanctuary is also integrated into the “Parque Nacional de Peneda e Gerês” and is about 150 km. From the city of Porto and on about 51km of the village of Arcos de Valdevez.

Having been recommended by Portuguese family to visit Sistelo, we drove our hire car there and saw beautiful scenery and sights. You need to park outside of the central old part of town and walk in. Although we didn’t do any walks as we had an elderly family member with us, we still managed to see amazing terraces of green and take lovely photos. Portugal has so much to offer and this part of the north is beautiful.
