Rode ferries across the Wabash River back in the day, the triple decker ferries in the NW USA and Vancouver to Victoria in Canada, and finally the Cave In Rock Ferry across the Ohio River! What a delight ferries are. On this trip we had a 89 yr old who had never been on the ferry at CIR! She had been to CIR many times, but not on the ferry! The Mississippi is busy cresting and the Ohio was reasonable! What a super smooth, efficient, well secured and safe feeling trip over to KY and a quick turnaround back to IL. We will do it again on the next trip to E-town and CIR. Yes, it is one of the free things still available in this world!!!

We are Chicago's river transportation service. An iconic fleet of black and yellow boats, we serve all three branches of the Chicago River from March to November. Our stops include Michigan Avenue, Chinatown, North Avenue, Clark and LaSalle, The Chicago Riverwalk, and Union and Ogilvie Train Station. There is no better way to get around Chicago than by boat!
I love taking the water taxi from Ogilvie to Michigan Ave. It's a calming way to start (and end) a day in the city. If you have the time, get the all-day pass and head down to Chinatown for a visit, then take a boat back north to Mag Mile The trip to and from Chinatown gives you a view of the city most native Chicagoans will never see

My family and I love to take the Channel Cat at least once a summer. It's a pleasant way to get out on the river and enjoy the scenery. The only down side is seating - since people can stay on for a full circuit, there are times when the boat is full, no one disembarks, and so you can wind up waiting for a couple of boats to arrive in order to actually be able to ride on the river. However, if you show up with flexibility in mind, your ride will be a dream.

In separate cars, we enjoyed a road trip with friends. Crossing the Brussels Ferry is always a treat. It’s a good idea to call in advance to make sure the ferry is running.

My wife and I have taken the Brussels Ferry to and from Pere Marquette Lodge and the Wittmond Hotel Restaurant many times. On our most recent trip we decided to drive back from lunch at the Wittmond Hotel Restaurant to our home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After a great and huge lunch at the Wittmond, we drove South to the Golden Eagle Ferry. The Golden Eagle crosses the Mississippi River which is much wider and has a much faster current than the short stretch of the Brussels Ferry crossing of the Illinois River. It was a great ride across the Mississippi River. My wife and I both marveled at the exceptional talent of our "Riverboat Captain." Perfect trip and truly a great experience!
