Top 9 Farms in Hamptons, Long Island

March 10, 2022 Rebbecca Marino

The legendary Hamptons, a cluster of wealthy enclaves on Long Island’s South Fork, remains a celebrity summer playground, with splashy restaurants and nightclubs galore. But lovely beaches, fishing and kayaking attract off-the-A-list visitors, as well. Old money oozes throughout Southampton, while new wealth reigns in East Hampton. Montauk is a hit with fishermen and surfers. The Long Island Railroad travels the Hamptons in an hour. The Sag Harbor Whaling Museum and Montauk lighthouse are popular stops.

We took friends from Singapore that hadn't had many farm experiences. This is fun. It doesn't take long. You pay for the milk to feed the goats by the honor system. We even used our credit card! The smiles and the fun we had in 20 minutes will stay with me for life. The goats are clean and friendly. This was a "10" of an experience. I would love to go back!

Sylvester Manor Educational Farm

Visitors are welcome to walk the grounds and trails, visit the farmstand, enjoy one of our many arts, music and educational programs and take a tour of the historic Manor House during scheduled tour dates. Our mission is to cultivate, preserve, and share these lands, buildings, and stories- inviting new thought about the importance of food, culture and place in our daily lives. Once a Native American hunting and fishing ground, Sylvester Manor has since 1652 been home to eleven generations of its original European settler family. It reflects a remarkably intact history of America's evolving tastes, economies and landscapes. Over time, the place has been transformed from a slaveholding provisioning plantation to an Enlightenment-era farm, then to a pioneering food industrialist's estate and today to an organic educational farm responsive to, and supported by, our neighbors and friends worldwide.

We were on Shelter Island for a weekend wedding and the family went out for a ride to entertain the grandkids, 6 and 4. We walked the farm and saw rows and rows of zinnias. The chickens were in a fenced pen. Its not a petting zoo but it was very interesting. The kids enjoyed buying apples at the stand and ate them as they walked around the farm. They declared that the apples were the best they had ever eaten. We also saw some very large pigs in a pen. There were some adults in the field who were learning about flower seeds. It was free to walk the grounds. I liked it.

Hank's Pumpkintown

If you want to go apple picking or pumpkin picking, this is a great place to do both without getting in your car to go to one or the other, you can do both if you like. Activities for all ages. Big enough place that the kids can run around and partake in what there is to offer. They even have a maze for children under the age of 3. It caters to all. They sell food, lines can be long, just make sure you are on the right line for what you want. They could have a few more shaded places to sit and rest especially when traveling with the elder or small children. If you enjoy the country side and don't mind making a day trip out to eastern long island then its a nice day trip. Roasted corn, freshly popped pop corn, pretzels, ice cream, candy apples, pies, etc. I've been to other farm stands that are great on the east end, it all depends of what you are looking for but this was spot on when traveling with kids. Downside, they blocked many of the aisles for the apple picking so I didn't feel I got my money's worth in that respect with a variety of apples but it was late in the season too.

Woodside Orchards

We've been stopping at Woodside for almost 5 years now. Every time we stop here we re-fill our growler and they actually remarked this time that we actually still have a first run growler; as that it was the old brown glass and had the original design on it. The reason we have been coming back time and time again is first; that they are run by a great group of people. They take the time to get to know their patrons by actually taking an interest in them, asking them how their day is going, and always give a heartfelt Thank You for stopping by...all with genuine smiles. The second reason we keep coming back is the product.... they offer 6 ciders at any given time; the Traditional and Traditional Sweet are always on the menu and then also 4 other specialties; such as a Raspberry or Pineapple-Mango. I'll be honest, I'm not into the fruity varieties they all taste great, however I personally stick with the Traditional Sweet, but my wife always goes with a fruit infused cider. They also offer something not to be passed up ...cider doughnuts!!! Especially when hot and fresh... absolutely delicious. I've read other reviews touting the pies, I personally have not had one, but if the doughnuts are any type of indicator ...they must also taste amazing.

We saw an episode of the east end with Doug Geed showcasing 7 Ponds Orchard in watermill. We took the kids and grandkids out there, only 1 1/2 hrs from oceanside. It was better than it looked on tv. Plenty of different apples to pick, tons of veggies and pumpkins to pick from, delicious baked goods and slides and rides for the kids. You have to take the kids thru the cornfield maze! Friendly, helpful staff keeps lines moving. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Thanks to Doug Geed and 7 ponds orchard!
