The Holy Resurrection cathedral is at the intersection of Jibek Jolu Avenue and Togolok and Moldo Street, a few blocks north of Chuy Avenue. The original cathedral opened in 1947, serving Bishkek's Russian Orthodox community. Two years of building renovations were completed in 2017 (although there is still some work ongoing in the courtyard). The results are a stunning Romanesque building in white stone topped by blue roofs and gold onion domes. The architecture blends neo-Gothic embellishments such as gables and dentals with Moorish details such as extensive ceramic tiles and pointed window arches. An eight-sided bell tower crowns the church, about 30 meters in height. The vaulted interior is spare (no pews), well-lit by arched windows, and smells faintly of incense. A three-level iconostasis behind the alter features pictures of saints and angels. Filigreed gold doors lead to an inner sanctuary and stations of the cross adorn the walls. The brass candle holders sprinkled about are well done. The peaceful interior invites the visitor to contemplate the spiritual power of the cathedral and its congregation. Icons are available for purchase in the gift shop. The courtyard surrounding the church is planted with flower beds and trees, and is a peaceful oasis from the busy city. It features a stone sculpture of the reverend Confessor Heraclius of Issyk-Kul in a contemplative pose. The cathedral is open the the public from 7.30 am-8 pm daily.
