An acronym for South Western Townships, Soweto was dubbed as such in 1963. The area began in the late 19th century as a temporary neighborhood for gold mine workers, then later became a black Johannesburg ghetto with forced apartheid settlement. In 1976, Soweto garnered international headlines with its deadly uprising against Afrikaans-only language education. The Mandela Family Museum and the recently restored Credo Mutwa Village (with its Zulu and Sotho homesteads) are two can't-miss sights.

Had a lovely time at the Griffin for after work drinks. The Mexican platter was amazing and the service and ambiance extra special. Would really recommend.

The Countess is an authentic American diner smokehouse combination. The steampunk interior is fun and cozy. We source the best ingredients and make everything ourselves, even the ketchup. We have a quirky and relaxed atmosphere and pride ourselves on frie
What a nice treat at Melvilleâs 27 Boxes. The Countess is certainly a big draw card in this center. With an extensive list of artisanal drinks, as well as interesting bistro type dishes, there truly is a delicious morsel for everyone. The plating and presentation is very creative and feels easy and relaxed. Amid this quirky cool space, have a small bite or a share board with interesting people.

We went to an Ale Expo at George Lea Park, which was very disappointing and wanted some lunch. Feeling like some beer and place to watch the motor GP, we went to the Brazenhead off Grayston Drive. We were seated quite quickly, but it took another 15 minutes to be asked for drinks - we actually had to go inside to find another seat before this happened. I ordered a double whisky which promply came in a tall glass with lots of ice - not the best way to serve or drink whisky. When our food came, there was more batter than fish and it was extremly greasy and oily! I only had a few bites before becoming nauseous. I would definitely not recommend this pub - although it looks nice enough and has sport on everywhere, the service and food was shocking! I was served two single whiskies and one double and was charged for three doubles!!

Thunder Gun Steakhouse first opened its doors in 1968. For over 50 years, weâve offered great food, friendly and efficient service and excellent value for money. Today, the tradition continues, with Thunder Gun Steakhouse enjoying a remarkably loyal follo
This old dame never disappoints. There is certainly a reason they have been around for so long. Maintaining the charm of a 60s/70s steakhouse. The waiting staff to management radiate old school warm, family hospitality. The food is certainly better than most fancy, trendy steakhouses in JHB. Their ribs are the star of the show. Ribs you will be craving soon after your 1st visit. Even their side dishes are pure comfort. If you feel like a starter before the gigantic rib portion, the prawn cocktail took me on a stroll down memory lane. Simple but delicious. The desserts will ring a few bells too! Will be back again and again. Saul, our waiter, was a gem. Donât know why all restaurants cannot maintain this kind of service and passion amongst staff. Winning formula.

Green and Gold is not just an average sports bar. They have several big screen HD TV's for watching the game/s and their menu will cater for every taste bud. It's not just an average bar menu and adds elements of steakhouse/grill too. The service can take a bit longer when it's busy, which they often are. This place is popular and well supported.
Seven99 itâs a cafe setup restaurant, based on reused Contanier as kitchen. Food is prepared a you order. Great atmosphere.

Soweto's best Shisa Nyama ( traditional BBQ ) restaurant situated at the base of the iconic Orlando Towers. Great place to hang out or even visit for a cold one during or after a tour !!
There is nothing I like less than to see other people eating food that looks better than mine ESPECIALLY when I was told there were only 3 choices...flank steak, pork chops, and lamb. As I was eating my not-that-great flank steak I see one of the servers pulling something out of a pot and slicing it up. Whatâs this? I think to myself. As I watch her put down a plate of delicious looking ribs piled high on a plate at the table behind me, I looked down at my sad piece of meat and wondered why I hadnât been offered the same thing. Well, I can tell you why! Iâm a white tourist and the other customers were not. I will never recommended or go back to this restaurant. ALL tourists should know that you are getting the crappy meat while others are getting the good stuff. PREJUDICE plain and simple plus their beans were too spicy (and I like spicy food), the coleslaw was too goopy, and the corn meal not cooked enough so it was ineffective for picking up food. Terrible food, terrible service, and no atmosphere (outside is fairly interesting but not worth the drive to).
