Discover Restaurants offering the best Asian food in Punakha, Punakha District, Bhutan. Punakha (Dzongkha: སྤུ་ན་ཁ་) is the administrative centre of Punakha dzongkhag, one of the 20 districts of Bhutan. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan and the seat of government until 1955, when the capital was moved to Thimphu. It is about 72 km away from Thimphu and it takes about 3 hours by car from the capital Thimphu. Unlike Thimphu it is quite warm in winter and hot in summer. It is located at an elevation of 1,200 metres above sea level and rice is grown as the main crop along the river valleys of two main rivers of Bhutan, the Pho Chu and Mo Chu. Dzongkha is widely spoken in this district.

Lonely planet had listed only this place for Punakha and had mentioned it as the best one in town. But the experience we had was quite the opposite. It scarred my previous experience of the incredible Bhutanese hospitality. I could totally swear off Lonely Planet forever due to this horrendous experience. The place was ridiculously overpriced. The food was mediocre. They had a very small buffet serving only rice, bland noodles, fiddlehead fern, a chicken curry, and stale watermelon for dessert. The waitresses were insufferably rude and arrogant. They didnât so much as bring water to the table. One of them bumped into my seat and offered no apology. While cleaning the table next to us, she chose to pile up the dirty dishes on our table. They didnât know anything about hospitality and service, and levied a service charge of rs. 100 for no service at all. They seem to be moderately better-behaved with white tourists though. The waitress offered high-pitched hellos to a table of white tourists and completely ignored the others thought they charged the same. This is the only place in Bhutan where I didnât leave any tips. If you donât want to spoil your experience of the perfect Bhutanese humbleness and hospitality, donât go here.
This place was a suggestion from our driver when we were starving for a quick & reasonable place to take our lunch in Punakha city. Serves very good & fresh food. We asked for only Rice & chicken curry, while some fresh made vegetable & onion salad was also added by the owner. Great hospitality, very reasonable & good food i must say. A good place for a quick meal....

We came here for lunch when we entered Punakha. The cafeteria looks over the farms & the Chimi Lhakhang. With its large windows, it's quite a meal with a view. We had Aloo-Matar, Chicken, Dal, Homemade Noodles, Manchurian, Mixed Vegetables & Rice. The food was average but full marks for the view. The service was good too.
This cafeteria is just few step down from the main raod of Punakha to Thimphu, just opposite RKPO Green resorts.Ambiance of the restaurant is very good, it serves Breakfast, lunch & dinner. Restaurant is very neat & clean. We orders veg munchuiran & Veg noodles & rice with masala tea. All the dishes were tasty but portion was little bit small. Owner of the restaurant is a beautiful young lady with-polite nature. Nearby so many souvinior shops are there..Vinod Tandon Delhi
Old town cafe is a new cafe in the old town of punakha , opposite the punakha Dzong taxi parking . We serve Bhutanese , Asian continental and American cuisine .
We had read good reviews of this place, so we went there for lunch after driving down straight from Thimpu with a stop over at Dochula Pass. Then we saw the Punakha Dzong & walked over the suspension bridge - we were quite hungry when we sat down for lunch. After ordering our food my appetite disappeared after we saw the tiny room in which we were seated had a restroom & that people were queuing up to use it! Don't make the mistake of sitting in this innermost room & don't order Momo's - rubbery & chewy

A pit stop while you are travelling out of Thimpu or entering Thimpu. The restaurant serves good food and also provides stunning view of snow peaks.
