One of the main reasons to visit the Shahrisabz is to see the mountain pass and the rural area of Uzbekistan. The road starts with the vineyards, fruit trees, vegetables and son. Slowly the elevation will change and the fields will be replaced by hills and eventually by Rocky Mountains. The “Teshik Tosh” or “Rock with the Hole” is the first stop to explore the incredible work made by mother nature. The legendary movie “Apachen” starring the famous Gojko Mitic was shot at the same location because of the resemblance with the American Southwest prairie.

4. 5 days tour from Tashkent to Almaty in Southern Kazakhstan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan Il'yas Otan

Shymkent is situated on a junction connecting Tashkent with Kazakhstan. Southern Kazakhstan’s Sufi heritage consists of the mausoleum of Yasawi towering out above Turkistan. Numerous other Sufi mausoleums dot the desert. Visit is not completed without seeing the ruins of Otrar and Sauran. Taraz and Zhambyl (Jambyl) oblast, medieval mausoleums, and parks sheltering tulips, birds, mountains and nomads hunting with Eagles in nearby town of Merki (Merke). Kazakhstan is a country the size of Europe - mountain and steppe, barely touched by modern civilization and whose inhabitants are mostly farmers. Its falconers continue the Central Asian tradition of flying golden eagles at hare for food and at fox for furs. During the Soviet period, many Kazakhs fled to Mongolia, bringing with them their tradition of hunting with eagles. The palace is nicely maintained but a little underwhelming. As long as you are walking the old city it’s not the worst idea to take a look but keep your expectations in check.

7. Аncient Fortresses of Khorezm

Khiva, Uzbekistan DOCA TOURS

The territory of ancient Khorezm is literally scattered with the ancient qalas ("Qala" means fortress) that remained of the border towns of the state of Khorezm, which were built to protect against nomadic raids. Most of them served their purpose successfully until the XIII century, before the capture of the country by hordes of Genghis Khan. The population of the country was mostly killed or enslaved, towns destroyed, economy ruined and the fortresses were abandoned. During the Soviet times, archeologists took the interest in fortresses, partially excavated and cleared them, the most valuable finds were taken to museums and the ruins were left alone again.

My tour of Bukhara was the highlight of my trip to Uzbekistan. My guide, Lola, was arguably the best tour guide I’ve had the pleasure to sightsee with. She had an exceptional knowledge of the history and landmarks and her enthusiasm of the subject matter was infectious. She tailored the tour to my interest and was extremely patient as I nerded out taking photographs. I so enjoyed my day with her and hope to get her as a guide again on my next trip to Uzbekistan. The tour was effortless with hotel pick up and drop off. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough! Well worth it!!

A great way to get a first impression of the city Traveling in the bus is comfortable and with the audio guide in different languages it offers a good opportunity to learn something about Tashkent. The start of the bus tour is at the famous Hotel Uzbekistan, Tashkent's first hotel, located on Amir Timur Square. The end of the tour is there again. You can get the tickets for the bus tour at the Hotel Uzbekistan. The tour stops at various places, such as the Minor Mosque or the old city district, where you have some time to watch the place and the buildings. There are also many sights you just drive by, such as the earthquake memorial. So you have the opportunity to get a first impression of the city and then visit some of the sights again with more time. Which of the sights are worth to visit with some more time depends on the interests. For me the Minor Mosque or the old city district have been worth to visit again.
