The city's population was 3,390 when the 2000 census figures were released, but that number was later revised to 3,808 because the Census Bureau had incorrectly reported that 418 residents of a Cornell College dormitory in Mount Vernon lived in the nearby city of Bertram. We were a big group that went on a Saturday night before the Cornell College graduation. We expected crowded and we got it. An hour wait for our table for eight! But it was worth every minute (ended up being closer to 45 minutes than 60) with excellent food and beer. It's a great atmosphere, brick walls, excellent bar area, just a fun ambience overall. Terrific service from the bar where we hung until our number was called, and that continued to our table. The wait staff was well-informed on both beer and food menus. We had a wide selection from the pizzas to parm fries, deviled eggs, burgers, no complaints from anyone...only compliments on the quality of the food.Did I mention the beer was excellent? Burch Brown was terrific and al the beers (wide selection!!!) were deemed super. Can't go wrong taking the trek to Solon for some great food, beer and relaxation! jwhallgren thank you for the great review! You caught us on what has become the busiest Saturday of the year, Cornell and Iowa graduation weekend. I very much appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. We are so happy to hear, that even at our busiest, the staff continues to hit our standards. We hope to see you again, soon!

Historic bridge and restaurant on the Cedar River. Stop in and try one of our hand-breaded jumbo tenderloins, or a Baxa burger! Wash it down with the coldest beer in town!
Another family owned gem. Been around a long time, off the beaten path, locals love this place, reasonable prices and the food is quite good. Burgers always taste like expensive fresh hamburger!

We met our daughter and her boyfriend (who is working on the Hwy. 30 by pass) on Friday night for dinner at Whitey's. They were very busy but, our waitress found us a table right away. Our drink orders taken we began to choose what our Friday night meal would be. They have a large menu with something for everyone. Daughters boy friend and I had the broasted pork chops(2) with 2 sides, daughter and wife had the ham and cheese sandwich with fries. In no time our food arrived and everyone was VERY pleased. Large portions, fair prices, GREAT waitresses that are VERY attentive, nice small town atmosphere, daily specials and ez to find location with lots of parking. This is one of the road crews favorite places to stop at the end of a hard day, have a drink and a good meal. When the road is done we plan to return and see the new road and have another meal at Whiteys.

This is any thing but fast. The food was ehh. My Wife ordered a fish sandwich and it was burned. The Manager said this is what happens to it when they run it through the grill. I think there corporate office has a lot to do with how they are being allowed to cook this. The manager was very accommodating and allowed us to order something else. The manager seems on the ball but the employees could care less. And for this they want to raise the Minimum wage.
Algers Pizza Palace provides Pizza, Homemade Appetizers, Drinks, Chicken Wings, and Salads and Sandwiches to the Mt. Vernon, IA area.
We visited Mt. Vernon during their annually popular "Chalk-the-Walk" when street artists create three-dimensional pictures and portraits of amazing detail. Looking for a bite and a soft drink, we visited Alger's and had a wonderful experience. Great food and service (ask for Max), we rested up and prepared for another visit to the art. Be sure to try the dessert pizza sticks.
Made reservations to stay in their Bed and Bath portion of the facility, somewhat leary of doing so after reading prior reviews. Regardless, it exceeded our expectations. Wait staff were excellent in the restaurant . Had pulled pork and it was outstanding.

We were looking for a place to watch the Hawkeye football game while having dinner with friends. The salmon salad with honey dijon dressing was surprisingly good for a bar. They were accommodating to make my wife's Czech reuben gluten free (no bread). The Sutliff hard cider is a local brew and was good. Dinner and drinks for 2 for $27 was an amazing value.

I've eaten here several times and found the food to be good. What prompted this review is my last visit. Whwn I was about to order, I was advised that it would take about 45 minutes to receive my order, since they were unusually busy. I appreciated their honesty, knowing that they would loose some customers (for that day).

While visiting niece at Cornell College, treated her and a friend to dinner. Based on previous reviews, visited Palisades Cafe. What a nice surprise. Menu was varied, with excellent choices for every taste bud. Wife's salad with buttermilk dressing and salmon flatbread ...Outstanding. my St Louis ribs and fries excelled...only needed my fork to seperate meat from bone. The "college" kids snarfed their meals as well. Originally thought about taking home leftovers, but cleaned their plates, and wife's as well! If in this neck of the woods again, will eat here again.
