Discover the best-preserved medieval town in Ireland and visit a place immortalized by the song ‘The Fields of Athenry’ as a town rich in history and culture.
We decided to go for the full experience which was amazingly good value and not that expensive. Everyone had fun getting dressed up in period costumes. Knights, Executioner and Lady-in-waiting, etc. It was a fun and engaging way to learn about the medieval history of Athenry. Our guides were very knowledgeable and provided lots of information, both horrible and humorous. To finish off the visit we tried our hand at Archery, which even our 9 year daughter enjoyed. It definitely worth making the trip to Athenry just to do this.

A new visitor centre in Ros Muc in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht that tells the story of Patrick Pearse, and brings visitors on a journey of discovery through the language, culture and landscape of this stunning part of south Connemara. Visit Teach an Phiarsaigh, the cottage where Patrick Pearse, writer, educator and leader of the 1916 Rising, spent his summers, and explore his legacy. Interactive exhibition in the new visitor centre brings to life the unique landscape, language and culture of southern Connemara that inspired Pearse’s work. Take the scenic looped walk across the bog from the visitor centre to Pearse’s cottage. And learn about contemporary life in Connemara, and how the Irish language, Gaelic sports and traditional music are part of everyday life. Situated on the Wild Atlantic way, on the R340 from Galway city, and from the N59 that links Galway city to Clifden via Maam Cross. Approx. driving times: Galway City 75 mins. Clifden 45 mins. Maam Cross 15 mins
In the past we have explored the location and surroundings of the Patrick Pearse cottage (Teach an Phiarsaigh), writer and leader of the 1916 Irish Revolution (Rising), off the R340 road, but it was closed on that visit – however, we did get an appreciation of its remote and atmosphereic surroundings. On a recent visit this year we checked out the new visitor centre (Ionad Cultúrtha an Phiarsaigh), in Ros Muc, with an interactive exhibition that celebrates the life of Pearse and his contributions to Irish freedom, the Irish language and the culture and landscape of this part of south Connemara. We didn’t have time on this occasion to make the journey across the bog to finally discover the cottage itself, where the great patriot spent his final summer in 1915 – however, we’ll be back!.
