The Northern Cape (Afrikaans: Noord-Kaap; Tswana: Kapa Bokone) is the largest and most sparsely populated province of South Africa. It was created in 1994 when the Cape Province was split up. Its capital is Kimberley. It includes the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, an international park shared with Botswana. It also includes the Augrabies Falls and the diamond mining regions in Kimberley and Alexander Bay. The Namaqualand region in the west is famous for its Namaqualand daisies. The southern towns of De Aar and Colesberg, in the Great Karoo, are major transport nodes between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. In the northeast, Kuruman is known as a mission station and also for its artesian spring, the Eye of Kuruman. The Orange River flows through the province, forming the borders with the Free State in the southeast and with Namibia to the northwest. The river is also used to irrigate the many vineyards in the arid region near Upington.

I have sent many of my tourists and guests on tours with Peter Giddy and they have always come back with glowing reports of the wonderful time they had. I was privileged to take my grandson on a hike up the Lady Slipper Mountain just outside Port Elizabeth. Peter was a great host and made the walk so interesting by pointing out different plants along the way and telling us stories about the area. He has many other walking/hiking tours and I would recommend that you do as many of these with Peter as you can I would recommend any tour with Peter.

If you are looking for impeccably organized tailor-made holidays, then Bumhi Safaris is definitely what you need. Ivana and Tende, a charming couple behind Bumhi Safaris organized our stay in the Cape Town region. Well ahead of our trip, they inquired about our interests and sent a lot of useful information and suggestions. Once on the spot, everything was carefully planned and perfectly organized. There was a right balance between various activities, on one hand, and free time, on the other. Ivana and Tende were just great, very professional and very friendly. We really enjoyed their company. Tende is an extremely knowledgeable guide, visits to Cape Point or the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden were a real crash course in the region's biodiversity. And he is also an excellent cook, he kept surprising us with his delicious meals. Wholehearted recommendation for Bumhi Safaris!

Walking 100kms through Namaqualand at the peak of the flowering season is a truly breathtaking trip – and the best way of experiencing the wonder of flowers in this semi-desert region. Many of the plant species found in Namaqualand are endemic and found nowhere else in the world. Visit places like Namaqua Nature Reserve, with its unique orange daisies, the cultural villages kamieskroon and Garies. He is professional, always attentive and great company. He knows the bush, and has a gift for finding the best wildlife and providing great sightings. In a few days we saw wild dog, as well as lion, leopard and rhino multiple times, and many birds too. His tours also provide unbeatable opportunities for nature photography.
