"Aigues-Mortes" translates to "dead waters," but the salt marshes surrounding this medieval city actually have given this town one of its chief industries: sea-salt production. (Bring some home for epicurean friends.) Fortified into a Mediterranean port in the 12th century, Aigues-Mortes’ massive walls survive—walk along them for great views.

Fun and fascinating tour of the nature and culture of the Camargue. The multilingual guide introduced us to the wildlife (18 bird species), Camargue and Lippezaner horses, the corrida and bull culture, the culture of the "gardians" (volunteer horsemen), costumes and customs, festivals, ecology, rice / wheat harvests, salinity and much time. Very fascinating.

PROVANS with Veronica and Nicolas is among the greatest tours we'd been. They extended their efforts to work with our schedule, picked us up at our hotel, then we had a terrific day through the Provencal countryside. We are looking forward to joining other tours by them in our next trip to the area. Or, even better is to arrange a bespoke itinerary out of the usual spots. Highly recommended!

3 1/2 stars. We drove around Salut for 5 - 6 hours looking for lavender fields. I was disappointed we did not visit Roussillon. On Tripadvisor’s itinerary “Roussillon: Stop 45 minutes” was written, so I expected we would go both Roussillon and Gordes then spend time on lavender fields, but it was different. Since it’s August, we didn’t visit Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque, neither. It’s good the guide was knowledgeable and knew so much about the lavender.
In this full day private tour, you will discover the Camargue region. Go to Saint Gilles du Gard village, which represents a famous stop for the Saint Jacques de Compostelle pilgrims to admire the abbey. Head towards Les Saintes Maries de la Mer and visit the church which contains the relics of Ste Sara. Your guide will then take you to Aigues Mortes, well-known for its 13th century military architecture wall.
