The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is a 3 day loop walk that takes trampers along the south coast of New Zealand, up to the sub-alpine zone of the Hump Ridge, and over historic viaducts in the heart of native forest. Our two backcountry lodges are in superb locations, each offering a unique stopping point along the walk. We are the only walking track in Fiordland that offers upgrade facilities to independent trampers. Why not enjoy a hot shower and super king-sized bed on your tramp? You can also have your bag, or yourself, flown by helicopter. Each of our lodges has disabled facilities and wheelchair access from the helipad, ensuring that everyone can enjoy our wilderness. Walking packages from $245. Bookings are essential - contact us for more information or to make a booking.
We walked this track over Christmas and we had heard aot about it so was not looking forward to the hill on day 1. It ended up being both doable and gorgeous with little special bits like having to scoop water out of the last stream before the climb by dropping a Billy into a running stream below a bridge....the people in front of us had left us some water in the Billy.....thanks heaps....was wonderful to arrive at the lodge to find comfortable and clean beds and a hot shower and spanking clean towels....we then went up onto the tops for an incredible view of the surrounds and some lovely above the bushline vegetation.... The following day, after Christmas breakfast of milky porridge, and brown sugar, we set off early to walk the ridge and drop down to the next lodge.....lots of board walk, spectacular weather and a long lovely drop to sea level.... Last day, lovely forest and beach and the big climb back from the beach to more forest. Loved this track...must have been fitter than I realised. Look forward to seeing this as our next great walk.

We travelled from Invercargill to Te Anau via the Southern Scenic route, and decided to add Lake Hauroko to our journey. The road in was well maintained and provided ease of access. The views from the lake shoreline were stunning. This really is one of this country’s lesser known hidden gems. The snow capped mountains, lush green Beech forests and deep dark still waters made for an unforgettable afternoon; a photographer’s dream. There is a short loop track just beyond the carpark (the sign says it takes 40 minutes, but it took us about half this time, so just take it slow and absorb the magic of this unique location). If time is limited and you’re choosing between Hauroko and Monowai, it really is a “no-brainer” - there’s simply no comparison. For us this lake was the jewel in the crown of the region and well worthwhile including it on our itinerary.

This place ticks all the boxes for budget accommodation. Very comfy bunkroom in an old and characterful house. Easy walking distance to shops, eateries and the most wonderful Tuatapere Domain, plus a new park planted with NZ-native plants a few minutes' walk away. Budget accommodation at its best.Unusual art gallery attached.

When the Clifden Suspension Bridge was built in 1898-1899, it was the longest suspension bridge in New Zealand. Today, it is a "Registered Place" with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust in recognition of its status as an "engineering achievement of outstanding heritage significance." This magnificent old structure is now closed to vehicular traffic, but it can still be crossed on foot, offering great views of the river below it. It is easily accessible from State Hwy 99, with a car park and a picnic area nearby. On the day we visited, a rooster and hen were begging for crumbs from our picnic table...and trout were visible in the stream.

Bring dimp/sand fly repellent, a camera, and some food and water. A bit of a drive off the main road, but you cannot deny the beauty of Lake Monowai. The lake is popular with local fishing and boating enthusiasts, and one can really see why. There is plenty of parking as well as enough walking tracks to keep one occupied for a while. A great place for a picnic, as well as a way to keep the kids entertained and get them tired out for the rest of the trip. There is a dam that visitors can have a look at and walk over as well as stunning forestry, wildlife, and scenery.
