Erlaufsee is a pretty Alpine lake with crystal-clear drinkable water in the vicinity of Mariazell (4 km) and Mitterbach, almost touching the border with Styria. It is a popular destination for day trips and hiking and a nice place for relaxing and family picnic. Whenever we visit Mariazell, we spend some time at Erlaufsee to relax and often have picnic with family and friends. It is a popular destination for day trips and hiking. The sandy beach is wonderful and it is an incredibly refreshing feeling to let your eyes wander across the lake to the majestic peaks in the background. Diving, kite-surfing, cycling, hiking, paragliding, rowing, windsurfing and fishing are some popular activities. A good way of exploring this wonderful lake is by boat which may be rented at the lake. Season starts from 1 May, when most of the facilities are available. In summer on sunny days, bathing in the lake is a pleasure. The nearest railway station is Mitterbach. It is about 3 hours by train (minimum 1 change) and 2.5 hours by road (170 km) from Vienna.
