This is a true gem. The museum contains all sorts of radio, telephone, and television technology from throughout the decades that were beautifully restored and displayed. There are quite a few that they've got working. One was an entertainment system with a radio, phonograph and television from 1948. The Siegel family first owned it. They also had several Edison wax cylinder phonographs that date to around the start of the 1900's. The curator, who is a media engineer, took us around and described and demonstrated many of the museum pieces. They are only open Fridays and Saturdays but if you are in the area well worth the time. I thank them for spending so much time with us.

Welcome to the East Texas Oil Museum at Kilgore College, located in Kilgore, Texas. This fascinating museum houses the authentic recreation of oil discovery and production in the early 1930s from the largest oil field inside U.S. boundaries. Journey back into the early 1930s to see how people lived. Refresh your memory to the lyrics of a deep-rooted gospel hymn in the church exhibit. Get a lesson in the history of local schools. Imagine how that antique car in the transportation exhibit traveled on those rough, rutted roads. Then step across the city limits to Boomtown, USA, a full-scale town of stores, people, animals, and machinery depicting the lively activity of a town booming in oil. It's fun and informative.
A visit to this museum is like a step back in time to the 1930s. They have a little town replica with everything from a store to a doctor's office. It was really cool walking into all the little buildings and seeing what everything was like back in the early days of Kilgore. We went on a Friday morning and had the option of having a tour guide which was included with the price of admission so of course we took that option. I don't know what days they offer this but I highly recommend it. We got to hear a lot of stories and learn about things that we would not have known had we taken the self guided tour. Our guide Ricky was amazing! His family worked in the oil industry so we learned a lot of things from him. Be prepared to spend about 2-3 hours on the guided tour because you get to watch a small video at the beginning as well. We all had such a great time. If you are ever in Kilgore you should definitely make a stop here. You won't regret it.

We stopped by to see this historical site on a Sunday afternoon. We decided to walk around the downtown area which ajoins this park. The downtown area is well maintained and extremely clean. We found an ice cream parlor and gift shop to be open and the staff along with local patrons were extremely friendly and welcoming to us.

We moved to east Texas in 1986 and Kilgore has always been our favorite place. When we lived in Tyler, we came over here to eat more than the places there. Places like the Country Tavern and the Hacienda.
