Many of the small towns in Texas that are county seats have beautiful historic courthouses located on a town square. The 1890 Hill County Courthouse in Hill County (30 minutes north of Waco just off I-35) is one of them. Surrounding this courthouse are numerous buildings that were built in the 1890's, now serving as stores and restaurants.

We saw the Texas Country Reporter episode and knew we had to see the Roadside America Museum. We were not disappointed - it was great. There are several rooms inside, ranging from an old American Gas Station, to a soda fountain, to a general store, to a music store and much more. Very well presented. Carol pointed out the actual casket used to bury the Big Bopper (we wondered how this was possible since if that were true, it would be in the ground somewhere - we later researched this and learned that it was true - the Big Bopper was exhumed and placed in a nicer casket and the original casket was placed in a rock music museum and now is here temporarily). Carol also has a signed guitar used by Stevie Ray Vaughn. So much to see here, from an early Jack-in-the-Box drive thru speaker, to several Big Boys, Mr. Peanut . . .Carol Estes gives a nice tour and is very friendly and welcoming. We do suggest you call in advance and set a time if you are driving from out-of-town.

I explored the mall going up and down the aisles several times discovering things from yesteryear and my childhood. From Lenox china to old crocks, Antique smoking pipes, a Titanic replica and the usual things you look for in an antique store as well as the unusual. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and the character of the building is worth the visit!
