Beautiful park! Camped 6 nights. Rained a lot first couple of days, so we didn't hike, but wanted to. Just too buggy and muddy. Beautiful lake martin. Watched the boats from our waterfront site. We mainly just relaxed and hung out. Would love to come back someday, but we live in Florida so hopefully next time we're heading north.

Horseshoe Bend National Military Park

This little park offers a tour of the battlefield where the Creek Indians were defeated basically ending the Creek Wars. The defeating forces were led by Andrew Jackson and this event was a contributor to his winning the presidency. Plan about a 60-90 minutes to visit the visitors center and then drive the loop and get more information on the battle.

Hodges Vineyards & Winery

Reviewed By Scalar - AL

Looking for a different experience that is “off the beaten path”? If you ever get to east central Alabama, stop by Hodges Vineyards & Winery (http://www.hodgesvineyards.com). This out of the way place is about a 20-minute drive west from Auburn University in Camp Hill, AL. Three of us travelled there in early August 2014 for a little wine tasting.

The area is rural in a setting of farmland, pastures and forest. The main building is set back from the county road down a gravel drive with vine plantings on both sides. As you enter the tasting area, there is a guest book on the counter. There was an Aussie with us. That put a ripple on the pages.

Bottles of wine are stocked all around. The tasting menu for the day was a full page. About 10 people were there after we arrived. I imagine a full room would be a bit cozy. Especially after getting half way down the page.

The wine was excellent, and is made using various fruits brought in from around the state. Some of the fruits include apple, peach, blueberry, and blackberry as well as local muscadine. The wines range from crisp and dry to fruity and sweet. One of our favorites was the sweet peach wine.

We left the building with a couple bottles under our arm, and stepped out to view the expansive planted vineyard. The cleared land around was offset against the lush summer foliage of trees in the background, while a show of huge cumulus clouds billowed up in the distant sky. It felt like being in the Pacific.

Nice folks, nice location, nice scenery, affordable pricing… Hard to go wrong here.

Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail

From CRATA.org site:"The Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trails are footpath only trails along an area of the southeast shore of beautiful Lake Martin (a 40,000-acre, 700-mile shoreline lake) in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. The trail provides the public with a water and wooded retreat into nature and promotes preservation of this unique alpine area of the Tallapoosa River Valley in Central Alabama."
Living nearby, I can drive over and enjoy the sunset view or take a short hike. Fairly hilly with spectacular views of Lake Martin. Good for ages children up though safety dictates close supervision of kids.

Smith Mountain Fire Tower

Reviewed By Nigel D

You'll have to follow the signs to find it, but Smith Historical Fire Tower gives you a gorgeous vantage point for viewing the lake and wilderness. It's half a mile into the mountain and half out, with little difficulty; there will be brief, steep inclines, but it's manageable for anyone without a medical condition.

I'm not exactly an engineer, but the tower gave all appearances of being safe and stable. Sunset's the best time to visit, as the water will set in the direction of the lake. It's not a long excursion, but that's part of the appeal; it's a quick attraction, leaving you happy without consuming your entire day.

Lake Martin Recreation Area

This destination was an unknown compromise between members of our far flung family. It was roughly equidistant for most of our members and we found a house big enough for all of our family thru VRBO. What and extremely pleasant compromise. The lake itself is quite large and pristine. The area is quite pretty and the perfect setting for families of all ages. The are has several good choices for restaurants and is close enough to several towns that offer many, many more choices from fast food to Gourmet. Many small islands and even an Island called Goat Island which was a huge attraction for the kids.
