During the 1790s, James Vann became a Cherokee Indian leader and wealthy businessman. He established the largest and most prosperous plantation in the Cherokee Nation, covering 1,000 acres of what is now Murray County. In 1804 he completed construction of a beautiful 2 ½ story brick home that was the most elegant in the Cherokee Nation. After Vann was murdered in 1809, his son Joseph inherited the mansion and plantation. Joseph was also a Cherokee leader and became even more wealthy than his father. In the 1830s almost the entire Cherokee Nation was forced west by state and federal troops on the infamous Trail of Tears. The Vann family lost their elegant home, rebuilding in the Cherokee Territory of Oklahoma. Today the Vann House survives as Georgia’s best-preserved historic Cherokee Indian home. A guided tour allows visitors to see the house which features beautiful hand carvings, a remarkable “floating” staircase, a 12-foot mantle and fine antiques.
Beautiful historical site with lots of history about the Indians in this area. The grounds are beautiful and well kept.

The trail was easy to find but the trail is not for small kids, small dogs or anyone winy. You drive about 1.5 miles in a dirt road access. Park and walk over some mud, rocks, multiple (10) creek crossings (about knee deep water) that can be slippery, climb through downed trees and end 3 + miles later at a beautiful 200 foot tall waterfall. It took us 1:30 to hike up and 1:20 to return. Bring water and snacks. Leave early. Follow the green tags on trees to stay on the trail. These tags can be challenging to find at the first creek crossing which is about 0.5 miles from the parking area. The first creek crossing very rocky. The rest of the hike is all woods Have fun

Just spent a week camping here and thought the place was awesome. Sites are wooded and lovely We were on the lake side- would highly recommend. Did three 1-1.6 mile hikes within the park with my 4 and 7 year olds: lake loop, big rock trail, and the tower/overlook/wall combo. Kids also got to fish for bluegill and really loved the beach area. Other activities that we didn’t explore were mini-golf and boat rentals (the latter was closed due to COVID but rentals are paddle or pedal only, no motors- which is fine with me). Thought it was a great family destination.
