Blackbird Distillery

Step back in time at Blackbird Distillery and experience old-fashioned moonshine made completely by hand, just like the old-timers did in the woods. Stop in to try a sample and listen to the staff talk about the history of moonshine and the whiskey rebellion.' Blackbird owners David and Jennifer Black pride themselves on producing their moonshine using a single run process. The shine is made in small batches, yielding just 40 fifth-sized bottles in each run, each resulting in a different alcohol proof. Their corn whiskey starts with mashing the corn by hand. The mash in then fermented and piped into the stills. Each bottle is hand-corked, sealed with hot wax, and labeled with the batch proof written by hand. Blackbird Distillery has 19 flavors of moonshine with more coming soon. While people rave about Blackbird’s moonshine, their canned goods and smoked meats and cheeses have developed a fan following as well. Blackbird smokes their own beef and pork jerky, ring bologna, and offers over 15 varieties of smoked cheese. You’ll love their homemade canned goods and moonshine barbecue sauces. For an unforgettable experience, visit Blackbird Distillery.

Scripture Rocks Heritage Park

Reviewed By copperdragon66 - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Scripture Rocks Heritage Park is a recently developed park located along PA 28 North, just outside of Brookville. It is open dawn to dusk and is free to visit. Due to the rocky nature of the trail, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone in a wheelchair or parents pushing a stroller.

It was developed here for historical reasons, being the location where one, Douglas Stahlman, spent a majority of his life etching more than 500 sandstone boulders with carvings in the early 1900's. They are categorized into "groves" where different affirmative life messages and quotes can be found regarding Health, Veil-Lifting, Consecration, Hope, Love and Courage.

Many of the quotes are taken from the Christian bible, but many also seem to have come from Mr Stahlman's personal experiences or are of unknown origin.

The Jefferson County Historical Society has done an excellent job of mapping and interpreting all the different carvings, and has placed many signs throughout the park. They also have further interpretation of many of the carvings or help the visitor locate hidden carvings, or give a historical or personal background that improves the understanding.

When arriving from route 28, there is an ample parking area, and a few scattered picnic tables. The entrance to the main part of the park is clearly marked on the right. Initially, the trail carefully skirts adjacent private property and after about 1/8 mile you come to the scripture grove. Here, having a map will greatly enhance your experience. If there are no maps in the box by the trail entrance, a quick visit to the Jefferson County Historical Society's web site (see the listing for this attraction above), will allow you to download a PDF map. The map lists all the carvings in the main part of the park, and shows all the trails.

The layout of the trails is such that children will probably enjoy being in the woods, and finding the secret passages around and between rocks. For adults, the interpretive signs are well thought out and interesting.

After visiting the park, I recommend visiting the Jefferson County History Museum (see other things to do in Brookville). If you're intrigued by the carvings, there are more in the area and the museum (or see their web site) can tell you where to find them, as well as current access (some are on private property).

A well thought out park with something to offer all ages. Great picnic spot.

My grandma always used to send us Easter boxes filled with chocolate from here. I stopped here while I was in the area to relive old memories. What a great little shop. There are all kinds of shaped chocolates, little filled chocolate delights and even a great range of sugar free options! It's a little pricey but it's a locally made product that's worth every penny!!

This is a VERY quick tour to see how baseball bats are made. You see the forming of bats from start to finish, sort of. Sort of, is because if the worker is not working at that moment you end up with just a quick explanation. Call ahead to see when they shut down for lunch. 10 minute tour. You can stretch a little longer if you ask questions. We felt very rushed during the tour. Yes, these bats are used in Little League, high schools, college and major leagues. Wood bats.

Beautiful trail with easy access from Brookville Depot. Wide flat trail is in great condition with solid base for biking, hiking, or cross country skiing. Surrounded by beautiful Pennsylvania hardwoods and a fresh flowing beautiful stream. I use this trail regularly with family, friends, or solo. Redbank Valley Rail Trail follows the old Allegheny Valley Railroad, which dates back to 1873. Mile 0 for the trail is at its west end, where the trail meets the Allegheny River and the Armstrong Trail. From there, the trail travels east to Brookville, winding along Redbank Creek for 41 miles across three counties.

The Open House Shop

Reviewed By TKay_12 - Oviedo, Florida

A very large building, with lots of antiques from furniture to dishes. The store is located right off of I-80 and easy to get on and off at this exit. I'm really not an antique collector, so I gave it an average score, since I don't have very much knowledge to compare other stores. I did enjoy my visit and saw similar items from my childhood: grandmother's rolling pin, Fiesta dishes and a crate to hold Nehi pop!
