The restored steam train is a great experience. it starts from Realp and ends in Oberwald (or vice-versa). there is a parking place in Realp nearby, it costs 5 CHF for the whole day. Before the train ride a small cafe is set up to serve coffee and croissants. the train is wonderfully restored and everyone is nice and helpful. if you ordered the ticket online you can exchange it for an old train ticket at the cashier in Realp before the ride. there is also a small shop in which you can buy some souvenirs. During the ride you are allowed to stay outside as well. there is on half the way a bit longer stop with toilet and food. In Oberwald you have a bit more than one hour and then you can take the train back (or use the normal train or the post bus). The ride is not cheap but worthwhile.

It was in the Ruetli Meadow, where leaders from three cantons: Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden met and took an oath to form a union, a nation we know today. You take a boat from Brunnen to Flueelen and walk up the steep hill. Every Independence Day, August 1, festivities take place here.

The best thing about renting a car to go to Lucerne is got to drive around the lake and see other places like Altdorf. What an amazing little town nestled in the mountains and this is its signature monument and piece of history. Uri and Altdorf are so stereotypical Swiss, a small valley village surrounded by tall, snow capped mountains on a lake, that you miss the fact that it is the historical beginning of Switzerland and William Tell is the legend that explains it. Around 1300, 3 cantons with Uri being the central one wanted to overthrow Hapsburg rule and be independent. They joined forces on a lakeside meadow and the rest is factual history. The allegory story to explain this whole event is William Tell. At this point it is impossible to tell if he is real or simply legend but his story explains the birth of Switzerland and he is factually set in Altdorf the historical center of Switzerland and Uri. For me this why I felt compelled to come to understand the beginning of Switzerland. As for the monument, it is beautiful in the afternoon sun surround in the town square and the mountains. I truly believe if you come to Switzerland, you really need to visit this monument and the Tellskapelle.
