I'd like to recommend our fantastic guide Berhanu (whatsapp +251914861090 / email [email protected]). We were camping in the Tigray region last month (Dec 2019) for 5 days. It was an all-inclusive package: guide(himself), transportation (airport to airport), camping equipment and camping crew, food, entrance fees). Berhanu helped to put together and customize everything. We discussed on whatsapp beforehand. The process went smooth, we were picked up on time at the airport, and visited all the churches as we agreed. (except one since we were out of time) The wonderful food our cook Mary prepared was one of the best we've had in Ethiopia. Berhanu put safety first, he was very caring when guiding us in the mountains. He took us to many great viewpoints (good for photos) where we didn't see other tourists around. On the last day, we camped at his mother's. It is a traditional house with lots farm animals around. His sister welcomed us with the coffee ceremony, and we even learned how to make injera from his mother! Overall, great experience. Contact Berhanu for your next trip! This young man owns a tour company in Hawzen, but he can arrange tours all around Ethiopia.

Visiting the Marty's memorial, I was vaguely aware of the rebellion that started in Tigray to overthrow the Derg, the military committee that seized control of Ethiopia in the 70's, and murdered Emperor Haile Selaisse. What I hadn't fully appreciated was how it started with just a handful of people, with very basic equipment and grew over the years until they finally won, and formed the new government. The monument is both a memorial to those who died during the civil wa, but also hosts a museum charting the atrocities of the Derg, and how their actions in the 80's exacerbated the famine which effected the northern regions of Ethiopia. It has a pictorial history of the rebel movement, along with example of the weapons they started with - rifles dating back to the first world war, homemade munitions - all the way through to tanks and field artillery that the seized from government forces as the war progressed. I was fortunate enough to have a veteran of the civil war as a guide, who was able to tell me first hand experiences of some of the major events. The Memorial also provides an impressive vantage point to look over Mek'ele, a town which suffered so much during the civil war and famine, and has now grown and developed in the years since.
