NOTICE: STEAM DAYS COMING UP QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND, JUNE 2021. We fire up our steam engine only a few times a year. For a unique experience witness a C19th gold-mining plant being run by a steam engine. NO EXTRA CHARGE ON ENTRY FEES - STEAM DAYS, 5, 6, 7 JUNE. For the past 60 years, we have developed our site into the main tourist attraction in Thames, almost entirely with voluntary labour. We take guided tours through C.19th century tunnels, demonstrate ancient gold processing machinery including a big stamper battery (rarely seen today) and visitors can pan for gold and keep any specks they find. Open school holidays in winter 10am-1pm every day and otherwise in winter 10-1 at weekends and public holidays. Spring and Summer open every day 10-4 except Christmas Day, Easter Friday and Anzac Day morning.
This experience is run by fantastic volunteers who are knowledgable about the mining process. They explain how the gold was mined and you get a chance to walk thru two levels of mine shafts. Completely recommend and fine for small children. People taller than 5 6 will spend their time in the shaft bent but it's not too long. Opportunity to learn gold panning as well for the kids

very modern Thames information center with a typically helpful kiwi manager to point you in the right direction to an ideal location on the coromandel peninsular.

Staff very knowledgably. We mentioned what and who we were looking and they recommended a couple of places we could visit. Pulled out a couple of books, and then even emailed us the following week with more information. Discovered grandma's grandad, on my father's side, was a Chief in the Fire Brigade in the day,,,,,,,never knew that.

What a gem to relax and unwind in. The pool complex offers two thermal pools- va large one for the whole family (36-38 degrees) and a smaller, hotter adult pool that’s around 41 degrees.

The Treasury is a heritage research centre and archive that collects, preserves and promotes the history of the Coromandel/Hauraki regions. The Treasury's research centre is housed in the historic Carnegie Library building in Thames and our purpose-built adjoining archive was constructed in 2014. The Treasury is operated by The Coromandel Heritage Trust. Our documentary heritage collection includes historical maps, family history books, gold mining history resources, a photographic collection, oral histories, newspapers, cemetery records, school records, Captain Cook and tangata whenua book collections and much more.
Popped in here to do family research. Lovely ladies very helpful with what we looking for, and knew exactly where to locate the information. Found a phot that we hadn't seen before. They recommended to us a couple of other places we should have visited, but we ran out of time.

If you are lucky enough to be here in November for the Steampunk the Thames Festival when the whole town goes troppo for a bit of Victorian-era explorer/inventor chic. The TSOA on the out-side of town is situated in an old schoolhouses, in which the gallery hosts exhibits by local artists many of whome are inspired by the steampunk ethos.
