The Abbaye aux Dames is today the musical hub of Saintes. It was the first convent in the Saintonge region. The nuns were powerful women, wearing crosses and striking coins. The influence of the abbey was vast. This is still true today thanks to its musical activities and its unique architectural heritage. The Notre Dames church is a pearl of Romanesque art. The portal is richly decorated. The bell tower, in the shape of a pine cone and covered in stone scales, can be visited. Why not follow the path to heaven, you'll find a panoramic view over the town of Saintes. Discover the convent building, from its chapter house to the nuns' private quarters.

Full of history. Have a walk around outside before going inside and you'll appreciate the past. Big chunks are missing having been destroyed in the 16th C. Look at the bullet marks in the side of the bell tower and see where once were statues of numerous saints. This is somewhere that's lived a life and suffered. Inside are a number of illustrated boards that give the history of the place. To the left of the entrance in what is now the market place once stood the house where Dr Guillotine was born. If you like history this is where you'll find it. If you're lucky Cedric or one of his pupils may be playing the organ. If in town we always pop in just in case. One Saturday/month is an organ concert, check with the tourist office or just look out for posters. Always good and sometimes truly amazing. They once showed the silent version of the Hunch Back of Notre Dame with music from the organ. Over 2 hours and worth very second.
