Wonderful, small place just 2 blocks away from the cruise port with delicious local food and great service. Definitely try the meat empanadas. If a large cruise arrives into port, beware and be a little patient, as the place gets packed! But the wait is worth!!!

We went to this lovely local restaurant on our group travel through Argentina. Our guide Lorenzo took us to Maria. We had a lovely meal and everyone enjoyed it so much. I ate the pollo al la Provenzal and it was fabulous. Lots of garlic which I love. The staff were very friendly and the wine tasted great. I almost felt guilty when the check came because we did not have to pay that much for a great meal so if you are in Esquel, do visit Maria!

On the plus side, this restaurant had friendly service, and opened early to accommodate us, since we aren't accustomed to dining at 2100h (when they normally open.) They also had a great selection of reasonably priced wines, and we made a couple of discoveries in the wine department. However, the food was very disappointing. We had the mixed parrillada, and it was mostly organ meats. The portions of actual steak were not good quality - and considering the absolutely superb Argentinian beef we've had elsewhere on this trip, we were surprised. We also asked for everything to be cooked 'Al Punto' (medium rare) and everything was well-done - inexcusable perhaps in a restaurant specializing in grilling. Willing to put this one down to maybe an off-night, as they got very busy after their early opening, but most of our meal ended up as doggie treats.

We had a grand tour before with All-Peninsula Valdes to Punta Loma and an excellent local tour guide Juan Carlos whom we asked for a recommendation for lunch where he would take his family and friends to. He recommended us to go to Matilde. Since we invited him and our driver to join, we asked him to order for us. He ordered the way; he would do, if he would dine out with friends and family: not a steak per person but mixed meat plates to share. It was an outstanding performance: not just the food but also to learn to the style like locals would do. So we got some parts of beef you would not get in a steakhouse in the Northern Hemisphere. But we were there to learn and to make new experiences. By the way, the money we paid for 13 persons was unbelievable - especially after the prices in Uruguay before.

Forget non-existing decor, uncomfortable chairs and endless waits for the food to be ready. Once in your table, you will try some of the best Argentinean beef available, grilled to perfection. Skip the lamb (they grill it for a very short time, so it is not as tender), and go straight to the bife de chorizo, or the ojo de bife (NY Strip/Ribeye steaks) and learn why so many Argentineans look down at vegans.

Our recent visit was for a very nice meal of cordero and wine. The cordero and the Malbec wine go together very well. I wish lamb like this was available in the USA but it is not. The Argentina lamb in Patagonia is very special and very good. The service was excellent making la Tradicion a pleasure to visit.
