Just off the A6, Wrest Park is a great place to stop off for an afternoon to take in the house and extensive gardens. The house has a few basic rooms set up with museum-style exhibits, plus a few impressive, if unfurnished, state rooms which are well worth exploring. However, the main draw here has to be the gardens which are well laid out across a large area with ornamental ponds, colourful parterre, a hidden sculpture gallery in the old dairy building, a grand orangery, the old bowling green house, an attractive pavilion and a nice 'Chinese' bridge among the highlights. There's some nice woodland to the far end of the property that's worth spending time in, as various statues and clearings can be found and we spotted muntjac deer out there too. A nice property that would be ideal for a warm summer's day but worked just as well on a bracing, but dry, winter's afternoon.

When you are only 2 I am sure everything is an adventure, and to visit Woodside with a 2 year old is also an adventure - it was a dry, fine day when we visited for the first time in many many years. There was a good range of animals and the opportunity for feeding them, lots of places to wash little fingers (and large ones too) and things to buy. There was a great indoor play area which was extremely popular with children of all ages and I am sure is really welcome when the weather is not so good. It was excellent value for money for the entry fee. There is an internal cafe and another stand alone one on site, with some other outlets and a dog grooming centre, and a DIY dog wash - all in all a great family day which we will remember with photos aplenty!

Ruins of a castle built in the 1400's - located next to some farmland. The route up to the castle is narrow and the roads are a bit tricky, as you approach the final stretch it's a dusty road. Parking just on the left as you arrive. Advice not to obstruct the farmlands. You could spend 40+ minutes investigating it's ruins and maybe longer if you wanted to sit and relax for a while.
