There lies a yellow pearl by the sea at Hemmestad. Time has stood still here for almost 200 years. History is everywhere. The store, the cod liver barrel and the nordlandsboat that bathe in the sun on the pebble beach, help to create a magical feeling from days gone by. Today the trading post is a museum where the old building on the wharf stands intact with shop, post office, store and museum exhibitions. Opening hours 23.06.-14.06.2011: Tuesday – Thursday 10:00 – 16:00 Saturday and Sunday 11:00 – 17:00 Off-season by appointment.

Trondenes Church

The world`s northernmost stone church, dating back to the late Middle Ages (1250). The church is set in scenic surroundings and boasts several treasures and a beautiful interior. Guided tours by appointment available year-round.

This sweet little church does not look like much from the outside, but it is a real treasure. From a historical perspective it is the northernmost medieval stone church in Norway and the world’s oldest northernmost surviving building. It was built over the remains of two previous stave churches (from the Vikings) around 1250. It was designed to serve as a sort of fort or safe place as the walls are thick stone and the windows up high. It is one of the largest of the medieval churches, is well preserved, and the exterior is believed to be close to the original. Despite a simple exterior, the inside is quite ornate. Of particular interest are the three Gothic triptychs.....stunning! The pulpit is interesting in Baroque style, and remains of frescoes can be seen. A very interesting, historic church.

Trondenes Fort - The Adolf Guns

Perfect example of German design quality this time creating a gun with attitude "bigger is better". Everything is planned and created for the systematic shooting process. This museum has kept everything in very good shape for next generations to remind scary times during the war both in Norway and Germany. The Guide really knew the gun, it's purpose and loading process. He could almost shoot with it :-).   Recommend visiting also in similar sites: 38 cm cannon in Møvik Kristiansand and Tirpitz Museum in Alta.
