We are a society for Mahatma Gandhi's idea of Khadi. Since its creation in June 2004, we have found incredible crafts of Khadi in the villages of Bikaner and their guardians - the artisans who have been considered untouchables and have faced immense adversity in life. In spite of this they have survived and carried their centuries old craft techniques. Mahatma Gandhi discovered Khadi as a medium of reviving the 'village culture' of India. The Charkha "spinning wheel" was his tool of freedom for all against the evils of modern industrialization. You are welcome to our shop "Charkha". We have more then 20 artisans associated with us from different villages who make beautiful cotton khadi fabrics, merino wool khadi shawls and stoles, screen printed traditional textiles, Bandhani textiles and still alive hand embroideries, all showcased for sell at Charkha. We organize personal day tours in and around Bikaner for crafts, culture and camels on special requests. Please make a call.

I spent an interesting 45 minutes or so with master painter Shiv Swami. It was he who established the Guinness World Record category and held the record for 6 months before a Chinese man who painted on a pinhead took over the title. Shiv is a fantastic craftsman and I learned much from his demonstrations and from studying his work under a powerful microscope. Lesson over, I looked all round the gallery and never felt under any pressure to buy. Thank you for your time Shiv, I really appreciated it:)
