Well, the woman who hosted our stay said Le Roi is expensive and more upscale than some of the other seafood restaurants along the coast, but coming from London - we thought it was an exceptionally good deal. My husband did have a wonderful - possibly one of his top 50 or so - meal. He ordered one of the assorted seafood platters. It was crammed with at least 6-7 different types of fresh seafood - mussels, of course, langoustines, shrimp, oysters, etc. It was cooked simply but well and he loved it. I am a vegetarian and we really only went there for my husband's sake... I explained this to the waitress and she and the chef very kindly cobbled together a delicious meal for me, including local cheeses. Paired with the house wine, it was actually delicious. Good atmosphere, friendly staff and other patrons (who helped us when we got confused). Perfect view. Plenty of parking right next to the restaurant. A really lovely evening.

Having read earlier reviews of this restaurant, I found the experience rather a disappointment. This started when I opened the door to find bland & soul-less décor and an unwelcoming waiter: I should have followed my instincts and walked out again (we hadn't booked)The menu was limited and had none of the staples one would expect to find on a seafood restaurant in Northern France. The starters were rather contrived - I had a 'minuscule' of tomato & mozzarella, and it certainly lived up to it's name, being a thin, half-postcard sized slice of what appeared to be reduced tomato puree with a few shavings of parmesan on the top. Hardly filling stuff. Starters were accompanied by a half-slice of bread per person, so there was no danger of me spoiling my appetite before the main course. My friends had shrimp croquettes, which were a bit more substantial, and accompanied by a salad which contained a couple of mussels, but for some unaccountable reason they were served in a small bowl. The main courses were a little better - two of us had what was described as plaice grilled with herbs. What we got was a nicely-cooked fillet of fish in a cream sauce with no herbs in evidence. The sautee potatoes we asked for to accompany it were three finger-sized batons. The rest of the veg were one slice of carrot (overdone) about 1/3 of a courgette and a very small turnip. The other main course was tagliatelli with scallops - 4 scallops on a reasonable but hardly generous serving of pasta. The wine list was overpriced, we chose a VDP de Pay's D'Oc, which was about £20, it was drinkable but not good value. My advice - if you're impressed by stand-offish service and arty-farty presentation rather than honest hearty fare, then this may be for you. It didn't do it for me.

Hotel was fine but cuisine was excellent, especially the seafood & made the one night visit prior to ferry departure from France well worth the visit. Would recommend the stay over just for the regional cuisine. Village was typical North Normandy, not particularly inviting but windswept beach was only 200 metres away.

This is a top fish monger with a few tables and a terrace. They serve what is basically a diy seafood platter on ice. You choose what you want, oysters, bulots, prawns, crab, lobster etc and they make it up for you. The lobster was also served grilled, and there are smoked fish platters. A few simple desserts and a wonderful wine list rounds it off. A stylish little place near the town centre and pleasure/fishing port. There is parking nearby. A must for seafood lovers in Dunkirk.

The reason for the title is simply because we had 2 basic main courses - Mussels with Garlic and Steak with Pepper Sauce. Simple enough you'd think but so many chefs leave you disappointed - not this one. The Mussels were perfectly cooked and the galic sauce was too die for - creamy and stunning. The Steak was also perfectly cooked Entrecote and the Pepper Sauce the best I've ever had. The salad with the Steak had a really good dressing too. All in all I thoroughly recommend Le Bako - just make sure you have a good Sat Nav as it's hard too find otherwise.
