I enjoyed the english language Sunday evening mass when I stayed in Reykjavik for a week. I felt very welcome and being able to attend an English language mass while on vacation made me feel right at home.

The outside of Domkirkjan is the traditional style Lutheran church building, simple and clean lines. There was no signage or signs of life, but I checked and the door was unlocked so we went in. I was surprised on walking inside; it was more ornate than I expected. We were told (on our Citywalk tour) that this church (not Hallgrimskirkja) is "the church" of Iceland, it has the history and the connection with the government that the newer (albeit larger) church lacks. Since the parliament building (althingi) is right next door, the church and government actually worked hand-in-hand. As we were leaving, I was charmed by the built-in bookshelves for hymnals in the back. Free to visit.
