This unique eatery is well worth the detour. Fish was really well prepared and I had the best Haloumi salad. Such a surprise to have such a well presented salad which was delicious. Amazing that such quality food can be prepared in such a small kitchen! The two ladies that run it so such a good job. One can sit inside or outside and both have beautiful ocean views. A lovely walk afterwards through forest and onto a beach.

Ordered rib steak with sauce on the side. You have to go to the bar to order and pick up from the bar. Took over an hour to be cooked. Asked to get the salad while we waited they refused. An hour + later the steak came with the sauce on it. Didn't want to wait another hour for them to redo it.

Otoko espresso serves not only great coffee but the best value whitebait patties in Haast. Also on the menu is aged organic venison burgers, delicious smoothies and frappes. A true blue West Coaster owns and operates Otoko espresso and I guarantee you a memorable experience to share with your family and friends back home.
Stopped at this cute tin food van foe lunch as was not disappointed. I am embarrassed to say that after polishing off a whitebait omelette we shared a venison burger...flavoursome and tender. Cannot recommend one over the other so have both. We sat on grass next door on a perfect summers day and enjoyed our picnic.

We offer a true New Zealand experience. From the menu to the decor you are set in a local scene. A bustling fire place, perfect after a long cold day. You must try our local cuisine, a whitebait pattie caught in the local river or a venison pie from the deep south, there is something for everyone, a chance to catch up with one of our locals and learn about our corner of the World.
The Frontier was recommended by our accommodation provider nearby but was disappointing! We ordered two burgers and fries which took 40 minutes to appear. The burger was ok but generally lacked flavor. The chips were cold and when we asked for a fresh lot the replacements were over cooked. They appeared to be previously cooked chips simply tossed back in the fryer to reheat them. We are here for two days but won't be back tomorrow.

Bad service, were told ages after ordering that the sausages were unavailable, then realized we had been overcharged when they tried to make us pay extra for a different meal. The reason? We've only had the cash register for a few months. Unbelievable. The food was fresh out of the freezer and bland. Also the sandflies were everywhere! Just don't eat here!!

Best wishes for your travels wherever they take you :) Kind regards, Tony and Moana

Famous West Coast whitebait patties caught and cooked on site. Curly Tree's whitebait patties are well-known for being full of whitebait - served on white bread with lemon, salt n pepper, and perhaps a dash of mint sauce. You will find the Curly Tree on the banks of the Waita river, amongst a dozen old whitebaiter's baches and huts. Call in between 10am and 5pm almost daily for a real taste of a kiwi delicacy. See you there! Cheers, Tony and Moana
As part of our tour, we stopped at Curly Tree Whitebait for a little education and whitebait snack. I had heard of whitebait, but I had no idea what it was. We were there near the end of the season, so our whitebait snack was...MoreThanks swoodruf!! Highly appreciated, we're so glad you enjoyed your experience at Curly Tree! A year later, things have not changed, still the best way to start your day in Haast. Whether I’m at home or somewhere else in the world, it’s always nice revisiting a favorite place and not being disappointed. Even nicer when the proprietor remembers you! Whether it’s raining or clear skies this place is always a bright spot on my travels to New Zealand.

We decided to have toasted sandwiches here for our breakfast. They were tasty and our coffees good. Service quick and friendly. This is a small cafe with a supermarket within...so handy for a shop after the long Haast Pass drive.
