Holland's most modern city began as a fishing village in the 13th century. It was developing into an industrial and trading power when German bombers destroyed the city center and harbor in 1940. However, Rotterdam's unique architecture now brings many visitors to bike around this urbane, cosmopolitan city. Old Dutch-style houses can still be found in historic Delfshaven, from where the pilgrims set sail in 1620. Cultural offerings from summer's carnival to classical music give Amsterdam competition.

Rotterdam's White House (Witte Huis) was the tallest office-building in Europe when it was built in 1898, and one of the few buildings in the center of town that survived the bombing raid on May 14,1940 during World War II.
The highest office building in Europe for many decades, Witte Huis is a symbol of the old Rotterdam, being one of the very few major buildings to have survived the WW2 bombing. It is located in the Old Harbour (Oude Haven) and it's an absolute must-see, because it is way more impressive in reality than in the photos. Unfortunately you can't go in, because it is an office building, but you can enjoy a beer or a snack at the cafe at the base of the building.

This impressive modern building is situated next to Blaak and nearby the Ibis Hotel. If you go to Blaak and the markthal, make sure to detour over there, it's a nice peaceful walk on the little canals.

A huge building with a magnificent architecture. We passed by it during the day when we were walking, then we came back at night... It was magnificent with the Xmas decoration and all the lights :-)

A truly fascinating experience. In a little space, in the heart of the cube houses, there's a vast collection (actually the biggest in the world) of chess sets, from all over the world. It's easy to lose yourself while admiring the fine craving of an african 200 years old ivory chess set. Also, the staff is super kind.
